I have a fairly new mechanical fuel pump on my 75 inline 6. As you know, the casing of the pump is essentially two pieces, joined by an overlap and crimped. One piece bolts to the block. Over the weekend, I was replacing a line to the carb and I noticed the part with the lines attached was turning where they join. It doesn't seem to be leaking or anything. Is this an issue? Does it need to be a sealed unit? Should I replace it?
What part was turning? The lines? Or the little saucer type thing?
The saucer shouldn't be leaking gas or oil, and if it is get the warranty (if it applies) if it isn't leaking, I would definitely watch it. It shouldn't swivel, but a tiny bit of movement might be okay
What's turning is the whole saucer-type piece that the line fittings are attached to. My main concern is whether the unit needs to be airtight or something for the fuel pump to work properly.
If it ain't leaking yet, it will soon enough. That part crimped on should not turn. That's also where my last one did start leaking. Still pumped enough to run, but it leaked.
x2 replace it
I thought you may have meant a jiggle or something in the whole unit. That saucer does need to be airtight. It'll idle if it goes bad, but it won't let you run at any throttle. You don't want any air in the fuel line.
