Carbd ranger engine identification help

So i bought this 1985 ford ranger with a rebuilt v6 engine, and the thing is a power house! However, i cannot seem to figure out what it is as it isn't the original and the guy who put the engine in was a dumb... anyways. The firing timing marker is just one mark on the LEFT side of the engine, and it doesnt say if its top dead center or 10 bellow. The oil dipstick is also on the left which means it isn't an original ranger motor. And another bad thing is that i cant use the distributor to tell what the engine is because the idiot strapped an inline 6 cylinder distro in there... so now im confused... I though it was originally a 2.8l v6 like the used to put in the 85s, just a different motor. But now because of the timing markings i think its a 4.0l with a new intake to allow a carb on it... please help!

That's a standard 2.8..........Appears to have been dura-spark modified (EEC-TFI) removed and de-smogged, there appears to be another dipstick in the lower right side portion of the last pic. Possibly the original pan rusted through or was damaged, and replaced with a oil pan from a 2.8 Mustang or Capri. There is NO way to build a carbed 4.0, the timing mark you will use is on the right end of the scale. Looks like a hack job on Dura sparking, be careful. Tune and time it to the specs. you would a late70s-1980 Mustang 2.8.

I don't recall ever reading or hearing about the 4.0L being a good candidate for a carb retrofit. Probably has been done before, but it's certainly not a bolt-in type of thing.

I'm not real familiar with 80's Ranger engines (or possible swaps) myself.

Just a thought: maybe it's one of those early 80's carbed V6s that Ford was stuffing in the Mercury Capri...?

(Edit: Looks like Dave ID'd it for ya. Good luck with your "new" Ranger).

What do you mean by the timing marker?
