Needing a new intake for my 460

Hello. I just yanked smooth running 460 out of a '77 Merc for my F350 4X4. There are a few things I'm gonna do to it before the transplant.

I was actually planning to use the stock cast iron intake manifold because I wasn't going to make any serious mods. Some friends of mine suggested using an aftermarket aluminum intake manifold. I don't think Im gonna be pulling the revs to benefit from a high performance intake.

Any suggestions? Thank you.

You'll get more of a benefit by using an early or aftermarket timing set than you will by simply swapping intakes but if you really want to buy one Id suggest a Edelbrock Performer (not an RPM or Airgap). I think its #2166.

the biggest gain would be the weight savings from swapping out the intakes. those cast iron manifolds are heavy.

the other thing you would need is a new carb as the 77 probalby has the Ford spread bore carb that will not bolt to any other manifold besides the factory one. different bolt and bore pattern then the other spread bores out there. but that would not be a bad thing as those spread bores are known to be tempermental and prone to warping the top plate.

but if it runs good and nothing wrong with it, i would probably keep the factory manifold and carb until the bug hits you to wake up the potential of the 460.

but definetly change the timing chain setup to the early straight up setup. huge difference for very little money and time.

Thank you for the replies. I will be changeing the timing chain with new to straighten out the timing. I think a '71 or pree would work. I also plan to swap the cam/lifters with an RV style along with enlarging the exhaust ports to eliminate the AIR bumps in them along with new valve springs. Headers will also be an addition.

I've got a Holley 750 double pump carb that I was planning to use but most of the people I speak with tell me to go with a Edelbrock. I'm not sure what kind of Edelbrock to go with.

I have always been under the impression that the stock cast iron intake would produce the most amount of torque for my needs since I'm not going to race the engine nor will it spend it's life at higher RPMs. This is a street truck that I will be using for occasional hauling/towing as well as pushing snow.

I'm running 33" tires with the stock 3.54's in the Dana 60's.

Thank you again for the replies.

BTW, you will never notice the 30-40lbs you stand to lose from going with an aluminum intake. Maybe on a race truck but not this build. McD is trying to say the truck will somehow be faster or etc by taking your tool box out the bed or something....its just not happening in this case.

The Edelbrock performer would be a nice addition and would gain you some power throughout the power band - but you may lose a small amount of torque just off idle.

Id get a 650 vac sec carb.
