Engine Knocking?!?!

Hey Gang,

Finially got my resto mobile last weekend. 78 f250 4x4 351m C6 .

Put new oil filter, new oil.

Ran up to temp and sounded just fine. Drove it 10' foward, 10' back. (small driveway). Sounded just fine.

The truck never overheated according to the temp gauge (factory) while idling in the drive way.

I go to spin the truck around in the drive yesterday and the truck doesnt want to start that easily. And when it does get going it sounds like a totally different engine than last weekend. Has a knocking sound coming from the bottom end. And the truck was idling rough. Had a couple back fires through the carb as well.

My Oil pressure guage wasnt moving, and wasnt sure if it even worked.

I deceided today to drain the new oil, and pull the filter to see if I would find any damage. Well I pull the filter.... and its only 1/8 full . I filled it when I did the oil change last weekend.

Then I drain the oil pan and find oil that looks like it hasnt been changed in 7k miles!!!!

I pull the pan and the oil pickup is a little gross... but not clogged as one would expect to see if the filter was the problem.

So I pull the pump, and the pump drive shaft. The shaft was keyed into the dist as it should have been, and the pump seemed fine.

I grabbed a drill and put the oil pump in a bucket full of oil. Key the drive into the pump, squeeze the drill trigger and oil comes out of the pump.

Everything tells me that the oil filter wasnt getting oil, but the pump seems to be working. The oil pan had some debris in it, but IDK if it was enough to clog the pump completely.

Should I buy another oil pump and try that?

Would lack of oil to the engine caused the carb to back fire?

I didnt mess with the dist yet but it seems fine. So Far!

If your lifters bleed off due to no pressure it will backfire
