towing & shifting

Seems my 2010 F-150 is shifting a bit too often. When I'm towing my 33ft Cougar trailer around 60 to 64 mph it will be in 5th gear. With the slightest grade change or small head wind it switches down to 4th gear...changing between gears too often. I have a 2010 F-150 5.4L, 3.73 axle, max tow package. Loaded my rv is slightly more than 9,000lbs. It has enough power. Anyone else having a similar problem?? Any solutions??

Do you have a tow/haul mode on your truck? Your truck is not able to keep your truck in overdrive. If you don't have a tow/haul then keep your truck in the next lower gear when the yoyoing starts. Not good for your tranny...

I'd drop is down a gear as well if no tow/mode.

Actually I think what you are experiencing is normal. I had an 06 F250 with the 5.4 and a 8K TT. It would do the same on occasion even with tow/haul.

Ups the RPM's to maintain what you need to keep going.

I had the same issue with my 07 F250 with 5.4 and a 9k TT. I was very uncomfortable with the gear hunting. It had tow/haul which was used religiously but still on the slightest grade, downshift and rpms went to 3500 to 4G's. They say High rpms are the norm, it was just unnerving for that thing to be at 3500+ rpms over half the time. I would think the F-150 may be a little less on the downshifting due to total weight but still, its normal and drop her down a gear and let it whin. That 5.4 will handle it.

Thanks for the comments so far. I forgot to say that I always
keep it in the tow/haul mode when towing this trailer.
There must be a way to tie into the transmission to hold it
in 4th gear when needed. thanks

The only way I could keep it from hunting was to stay out of cruise control and let off going up hills so it would not down shift. I did take it out of tow/haul on going down long hills so I would coast, that can be good but yet bad if you let it get rolling to fast. I just feel it to be better to allow tow/haul do the shifting and braking. Sounds like you have the same philosopy as me, try to keep it in one gear to keep rpms down and fuel mileage up. Good Luck...
