Charging system troubles

A U.S. version 2003 Explorer XLT (4WD/4.6L/VIN: 1FMDU73W23UB27131) was taken to dealer for initial inspection and oil change at 3000 miles. Upon return of vehicle to service, an intermittent "check charging system" warning came on twice and no other warning or indications of malfunction were received until 2 days later when a complete failure of the charging system occured while traveling at night. The first indication of trouble was a lower level of charge as indicated by the gauge on the instrument panel, the ABS warning light came on and Control-Track turned itself off, finally a warning to "check charging system" came on. Battery was completely depleted and vehicle had to be towed back to the dealer. Upon inspection by the dealer in the morning, the vehicle started and charging system worked well. No problem codes were stored in the system's computer to indicate there was any trouble. Dealer indicated they had found nothing wrong after checking the system, but would replace the battery just in case. Any ideas?

Charging system troubles

Sounds like an intermittent problem, so it's going to be hard to find, even by the dealer. Be patient but persistent if it occurs again.

Charging system troubles

If the battery was "totally depleted", you would lose your
error codes.....
