driveshaft vibration

My son drives a 90 Bronco II, 2WD with automatic, and I help him with repairs. Lately he is experienceing a lot of vibration coming from the driveline and it is most noticeable when going around a right curve. We've had the car looked at by 3 different mechanics and gotten 3 different opinions. One mechanic says the diff has too much play and needs replaced. Another mechanic says the noise is coming possibly from the transmission or from driveshaft out of balance. It has the CV type driveshaft and we checked into changing to a U joint type, but they want about $400, and we don't want to spend the money if it won't fix the problem. Any ideas on how to pinpoint the problem would be greatly appreciated.

driveshaft vibration

the first thing i would do is to check all of your joints, make sure all the connections are tightend. if that does not work, replace the whole thing.you can go to a junk yard and pull off a working one for almost nothing

driveshaft vibration

This is just a thought. I have an 87 b2 with the cv type driveshaft as well and mine is bad about the bolts that hold the shaft to the rear diff loosening and causing vibrations. This may or may not be what your problem is, but it is worth a check. If this is the case then it will vibrate worse when the transmission downshifts and then smooth out somewhat when you accelerate. check them to be sure they are tight. I too agree that if you are looking to not spend alot of money then a salvage yard would be your best bet for a replacement driveshaft. Plus, you could keep the old one and take it to a good drifshaft rebuilder at your leasure so you will have a good one when the salvage one goes out...which it most definately will eventually.

My husband's 90 Bronco 2 had vibration like that, also. He checked the driveshaft connection to the rear differential and to the transfer case and found a couple bolts loose on both. When he tightened them, the vibration went away.
