Rear Diff Spline numbers

Is there a way to tell how many splines a diff has by not taking it apart. I looked all over for a tag or numbers. Am I looking in the wrong spots?

Could have 28 or 31 splines. The only way to find out is from the ID tag on the rear axle, usually mounted at 5 o'clock under one of the bolts that retains the carrier (pumpkin) to the housing.

If the ID tag is missing, you'll have to pull an axle. The AXLE code on the Warranty Plate does not define the number of splines once it's decoded.

The AXLE code lists the type of rear axle, ratio, with/without Limited Slip, and the rear axle capacity in lbs.
