I have a 75 390 with a 4 berrel stock s intake with headers and holley truck avenger 670. I got a lifter ticking so i figured might as well change the cam and and timing gears. I want to use the truck for mild off road and around town. I dont want to change the valve springs though. What would you reconmend?
Figure out what your oil pressure is right now when hot. The REAL pressure with a mechanical gauge, and report back. That ticking might be oil pressure related, and if so, the bottom end might be on it's way out.
Throwing a new cam in there might not be the best thing to do in that case
As to cam recommendations, can't really help there, let others chime in.
I would, however, seriously consider doing the valve springs if everything on the heads is in good shape. Even stock springs with only 20K miles on them can be weaker than you'd expect.
I am rebuilding a 67 390 out of a tbird , been looking at the 268h comp cams and lunati 62001 . i am thinking i want to replace springs, retainers and locks as the last cam swap i did 65 289 i used the stock spriings and a valve dropped within a year .
The one i've set my mind on buying and the next year or two is the comp 252high energy. My truck has the same use as yours, and it pretty much never sees 4000rpm, and that cam as an operating range from 800-4800rpms. So that is perfect to me.
