Ok I have read that the heads on our stock 302's are very restrictive. So i see these E-7 heads off of 90's model mustangs on craigslist for $50 all the time. Would these fit first off? And would if they do, will they liven this 140hp hunk of lead up? Also would the intake manifold off one of the 80's mustangs fit and also would it be worth it?
Your best is go to your local pick-a-part and get a set of gt40 heads from a 96 or early 97 explorer. Stay away from the gt40p unless you've got the money for a special header. But the e7 head will bolt on, although probably not worth the effort. And if they came off of a 351 they will require a special head bolt because the 351 takes a 1/2" bolt as opposed to the 302's 7/16
Ok cool, I see 351w heads a lot too. So all i would need on those is 7/16" headbolts? Are the 351 heads a good investment? Also what do you know about the intake manifolds?
To use the 351w heads on your 302 you will need a bolt kit with a reduced thread. Meaning the shank is 1/2" and the threads are 7/16". They also make a collar that fits on your stock 302 bolts. The 351w E7TE heads are exactly the same as the 302 E7TE except for the bolt hole size. The 302 intake should work also unless you end up with a set of early 351w heads. I still would not bother with those heads, they are not much better than what you are working with already.
Well damn. Im trying to find a cheap way to liven this weak motor up lol. My other thought was to just take a 90's mustang 5.0 and drop it in since they are a dime a dozen now. i just cant figure what they did to choke all the hp out of this motor! 140 hp out of a v8, really?!!!
I'm saying your best bang for the buck would be the GT40 heads. I had to pull them myself, but i paid $100 for mine, $8 for the stuff to convert to a roller cam, and $52 for the upper and lower GT40 intake. I then sold the intake to a mustang guy for $100. I had to take it off to get the heads off, so I figured I might as well take it. A mild cam such as a CompCams 31-234-3 should wake it up too. Desktop Dyno says that combo with a dual plane manifold, 600 cfm 4bbl carb, and headers will get you over 270 hp at the flywheel. And thats only figured for 8.5:1 compression. Just make sure you get the GT40 heads and not the GT40P unless you have the extra cash for the specific header that fits it.
