While my truck is a down unit waiting for a new hub to arrive, I've been working on the tunes situation. My dash had a huge freaking hole in it from a PO's cb installation. I snagged an original am unit off ebay and had it refurbished, picked up an OE style 5"x7" dash speaker, and fabbed a face plate to mount the radio. It might look a bit hokey to purists, but it beats the heck out of the ol' hole in the dash. Sounds a lot better too. Since I have no welding skills at all, this'll have to do for the time being.
I also got a original dash speaker grill in today & hit it with a wire wheel & painted it up. It'll go nicely with a new dash pad down the road a bit.

nice, i still got the original radio in my ol truck (Am only tho....) but my gramps put an afterpart radio beloew the AC unit with the speakers inside the door, but that looks nice. u shoulda matched the white instead of a red plate on white
Your fix looks good. How does the 5"x7" speaker fit? I have to find a speaker for the dash myself. Have an the orig AM radio. Not even sure it works.
Here's a link to the speaker source I used. The 5"x7" Oval ($39.95, about halfway down the page) is a perfect fit to the holes in the dash grille and @ 8 ohms is a correct match for the original radio.
Actually, I paid $50 on ebay for my radio about 5 yrs ago. It'd been sitting around for way too long. I sent it to classicradio.com, since he's near me here in norcal. He wasn't exactly cheap, but he is very thorough.
I think you did a great job. As said you should have (and still should) paint the patch to match the white. If it would have been white, you would'nt drw attention to it. As a red patch over white, your drawing attention to it. Other than that I think you did an excellent job.
Take a look at my gallery see how I handled the holes in the dash.
Ok, here's a pic you can laugh at because it's only temporary. After installing the radio & speaker and plugging the antenna, I wasn't getting any reception at all. I had this antenna laying around unopened, so I had to swap out the original for this hokey looking unit until I can get a stock replacement. Works great, looks...not so much!
Nice job on the radio, hey I was wondering what the strip of metal is just under the drip rail and just above the top of the window rubber it looks like it held in place with a rivet?
i just recently started driving my 64 again and was thinking of putting a new speaker in since my am radio work pretty good but the speaker is terrible.

It's not a rivet. It's the sun reflecting off a lump of sealer from a PO's paint job.
