I wanted to get some thoughts and ideas on swapping over my 4 speed manual to an automatic transmission. The truck has a 351 windsor in it that came in the truck when I purchased it and I am debating on what is the best auto tranny to go with. I know there is the C6 and C4 but I wanted to see who has more info on which would be best or if there was another option.
I do not plan on taking long road trips in the truck but it will probably be used to tow sometimes along with going to near by towns that are within a few hour drive.
The C4 is good for driving, but I wouldn't think about towing with it.
The C6 is good for anything you can throw out at it, but it can cost a couple of mpg's when driving.
You can go for an AOD since you have a 351W, and a properly built one is a good trans. Get the constant presure valve body to eliminate TV cable adjustment probs. Cost is pretty high, but drivibilty will be that way too.

Thanks for the info. I would like to go with an AOD if it can handle some towing. From what I have found in my research there seems to be talk of them being a weak transmission. However, I would like to go with this option if possible. I also read that the best years to look for is 88-93.
To swap this into my 66 I would need to remove the manual trans/pilot bearing then change out the flywheel and just do a slight modification to use the stock trans mount/crossmember. Of course I would also need whatever necessary to hook a column shifter to the trans.
I don't actually have experience with it, but people use C6 in big mud trucks with huge engines and tires and I don't hear about problems with them, so that what id go with.
As Zieg said, a properly (read: expensive) built AOD or C4 will work just fine. It will be pricey unless you have the know-how to get a junker from a yard for a few hundred and rebuilt it yourself.
However a C6 is pretty much bulletproof to over 800 horse in its stock form. You can find C6's with the SBF bellhousing on them. Not super common, but they do exist. You would have to find out what they came out of. Maybe someone can shed some light on that.
Your stock cross-member will be just fine. You may need to scoot it back some, drill some new holes in the frame, and change the mount, but it should be just fine.
