Lets see pics of your tailgate color / Letter color combos, I just painted my truck Black / Silver and i'm having issues trying to decide what color letters i need to order. Please help a brother out! THanks in advance!!!
Here's my color combo:
And i'm torn between black, silver, or Red letters. I did see some Chrome Mylar letters but i'm not sure about those.
From your paint scheme, which I really like, it appears that your tailgate is going to be silver with black at the top. That being said, I would go with RED lettering on the tailgate.
A RED interior will also look great against your exterior colors of black and silver, and I would also go with a RED pinstripe.
What color is your interior? I think the F O R D tailgate lettering should match the interior color and/or exterior stripe. Will you have a stripe on the body at all?
I'd vote black letters...I think it would look great against the silver background. Silver or white letters wouldn't stand out right, I think. And the fake chrome letters/decals that are out now look super gaudy to me
If your exterior is going to be black and silver, and the interior is black/gray, and you decide to go with the BLACK lettering on the tailgate letters, then the red wheel center caps are going to look completely out of place. The BLACK wheel center caps found on the 1992-1996 F-Series trucks would be a better match.
If you insist on the red wheel center caps, I would definitely go with RED Ford letters on the tailgate and a red pinstripe on the side.
I'd go with black tailgate letters, and no factory center caps at all. They only offered the black variant of the Ranger/BII/Aerostar center caps for a couple years to my knowledge, as the wheel styles changed after 1992, so I bet factory original ones are hard to find. I don't trust the quality of aftermarket caps, unless the factory RBV ones were plastic.
Like 81 Explorer said, there are exceptions. My F100 came with white letters on a light sand tailgate. I think brown would have looked much better. But since my truck is a Ranger Lariat clone, the tailgate panel will just cover it up any way.

I disagree with the red centers looking out of place. They used those red centers on trucks of all colors, be they red, white, black, brown, blue, green, gray....ECT.

You are correct in saying that Ford used the red centers on trucks of all colors in the 1980s, but that doesn't mean that the red doesn't look out of place on a truck like Greyf100's. His truck has a black and silver exterior with a black and gray interior, and no other red anywhere on it.
Looking at his truck, you will see that there is nothing at all red on it, which is why I say that those small red center caps would look out of place, unless he were to go with RED Ford tailgate lettering and a RED tape stripe. If it were MY truck, which it isn't, and I were going with BLACK tailgate lettering with no side stripe, I would either get the BLACK center caps or buy the BLACK adhesive center cap logos with the blue "Ford" oval in the middle. This would match the all black and silver/gray look Greyf100 is going for.
Greyf100, I also prefer the bottom wheel without the rivets as opposed to the top wheel with rivets. But with your colors, I also thought the stock silver "Ford Motor Company" dog dish hubcaps you had looked really nice on your truck.
