Question oil temp

Anybody know what and average oil temp for a 2004 6.0 would be and how much it should change while towing? Any info would help.

The oil temp should never be more than 15 degrees higher than the ect when driving at operating temps 65 mph. If it is then you have issues.

yep did a coolant flush a few weeks ago and after towing my fifth the weekend the fan kept coming on and off ,it was a 105 temp outside so I thought it was because it was so hot. The ect was @ 192 but the eot was 252 @ it's hottest after awhile of towing then back to 240 and then fan would shut down. but I never paid much attention to eot until I noticed the fan coming on and off and simply for the fact that I had done the flush myself just as a maintenance thing at a 100,000 miles. strange though the coolant temp stays constant and trans temp stays constant, are these eot's normal or high? Never had a problem or don't know if I have a problem. Also didn't use ford gold coolant used what advanced discount auto recommended for coolant for fords.

Sounds like you have a oil cooler plugged up. What coolant did advanced recommend? I can't think of anything they have that is compatible with your truck. I would get rid of that stuff quick, and don't use anything other than ford gold, zrex g05, or a cat ec1 certified elc!

WOW a 60* spread thats the biggest spread Iv seen

IIRC th engine defuel at 253* EOT

were the oil temps this bad before the flush probably got worse because of the flush

since eot and ect are so far apart I would say its time for a new oil cooler

I havent seen any one succesfully flush there oil cooler with that kinda spread

do you have a square or round egr cooler

hope you dont have green coolant in it that stuff will slime the hole system

I think they got this way after the flush. I have a bully dog gt to monitor the system with but I am not sure of previous oil temp. Normal drive today with no load was 192 ect and 222 eot for 50 miles stayed the same consistantly though.yeller looking stuff that I got from discount auto, It said that it worked for ford diesel too.I guess I'am a sucker. But just never heard of doing a coolant flush and have a cooler problem after. It was very clean system, just thought after 40,000 it should be changed. But I take the advice well. Didn't do a complete flush just drained the sytem filled with water drove till temp and flushed three more times like this then added coolant and water.

Look in the tech folder for a good explanation on how to flush the coolant system. Sounds like you have a plugged oil cooler. One more thing to check is your temps first thing in the morning after a cold soak. Just to verify you don't have a bad sensor. After at least a 12-15 hour cold soak (motor not running) the ect and EOT should be the same or no more than a degree or two difference. If they look good then I would not drive the truck anymore until you change out the oil cooler. Driving with a plugged oil cooler will cost you a lot of money if it goes out completely.

You definitely need a new oil cooler, you have a 30 deg. spread just driving unloaded. Depending on what year EGR cooler you have, you might want to replace that also.

becareful with it watch for oil in the coolant bottle if it pops its a mess and will destroy te moter fast

most people here use ford gold or ELC cat EC-1` rated coolant
look at coolant in sig its also silicate free

do you have a round or square egr cooler???

you may want to flush with cleaner if you see any signs that coolant you got is causing slim issues from the high heat of a diesel

my old oil cooler had a spread of ect 195 and eot 220 avg

I just cut open the old oil cooler and ALL the coolant passsages had buildup or were plugged solid

Do ya think just because I am using the old discount auto coolant that might be the reason for the higher oil temps or just by dropping the lower hose and clean water flushing several times would have plugged the oil cooler , I'am pretty sure I didn't have these temp problems before the flush or my fan would have or should have come on before? Could the flush cause this? didn't pull blocks plugs cause I couldn't find them. Or maybe just flushing again and putting the good stuff back would help? Thanks for all the advice just got the dang thing paid for and seems like it just started acting nasty. It's like it new what the payoff day was and it was out of warranty, but has been great until then

I dont see a couple of water flushes drain and fill causing to much problem

I think it could be the type of coolant your running
but hard to say since you didnt see temps before

most people that clog there oil cooler after a flush used chemicals to break the junk loose and flush it out but usualy just gets stuck in the oil cooler
The coolant passages in the oil cooler are half the size of the oil pssages so its easy to clog

stick around here lots of people have helped me with stuff and LOTs of great info in the tech folder
welcome to FTE

towing? depends on load, out side temp, and how you drive.

I hit 220 with 10,000lbs with temps 40-70. I also hit 210 easy in the summer unloaded 80-110.

Try to backflush your cooler.there's a cover under the outlet of the turbo you can take off and stuff a piece of clear hose in there and remove the driverside block plug, and the lower rad hose and let it flush for an hour or so.do a search on it.its worth a try.I went from 27* spread at 70 to 18* after flushing, but went back to ect178,eot 247 empty after a week.ended up doing a cooler to find my radiator has got my cooling system on a constant diet of scale.good luck to ya,changing the cooler is a piece of cake, the hard part is making sure the cooling systems clean
