My late husband's F250 failed inspection due to a leak in the passenger side
exhaust manifold. I took it to a shop a friend recommended and they said it has a cracked manifold and 2 broken studs .
Their extimate is $1050 to $1270 depending on whether more studs break during repair.
When I get an inspection I expect a light or windsheild wiper but this ..Yikes !!
My question is whether this amount sounds reasonable..Finances are
rough right now.
What year and engine type do you have? Exhaust manifolds can be real trouble to work on because the bolts seize up in there. Not too many come out easily.
Sorry to hear of your loss. Labor rates vary so much that it is hard to tell you if that is a good price in your area. My advice would be to get 2 more estimates from other shops. It is not a complicated job, just time consuming. It is also a common problem with either gas engine in that year.
Going to another inspector might be a good idea. But, if the manifold really is cracked there is some danger of carbon monoxide poisoning in the cab. It's not likely, but the risk is there. It really should be fixed.
Where are you? Maybe go to a different insp station?
Dick
That is brillant..I never thought of it.
problem is with NC the inspection & registration are linked and the tag place seems to know when you even head towards the inspection place. I bet my truck is flagged ...But maybe not..
Then would I be doing more damage by not fixing it??
I am thinking about selling it so maybe I could sell it to a mechanic who could fix it for less than 1000.
Also they are charging me 45 to 90 they said to look at it to give me estimate.
Maybe that is normal but the place I used to use(and should have this time ) doesn't charge to work up a price to fix.
Most shops can't give a straight estimate on that job. Time and materials usually. Time being the real cost. The 2 studs could be broken inside the head and a PITA to get out. They all may break during removal. It all depends on how the job goes. Those $ #s are kind of right on. 1000 give or take is what I usually hear. Sorry for your lose. Good luck.

Okay..that helps..if it cost that I just suck it up and do it..I just didn't want to get taken. He did mention that the range was because some could break during the repair.
I did mine and it wasn't pretty..Both sides really need to be done.. In 03 they went to stainless studs, Still steel nuts... Ebay has all stainless kits..
why doesn't ford stand behind something like that then..
My husband thought ford was so great but he has had transmission work
every year or so & now this.
