Just completely rebuild my 292. New everything. The major problem is I cannot turn the idle any lower. I have a new 600 cfm carb. Any suggestions what is causing this?
I think the carb is too large for the engine. To get it to idle at all requires opening the primary throttle blades more than usual, actuating the intermediate or transitional cicuit, making the idle screw adjustment meaningless.
Holley 390 cfm is the size for stock 292s. Guys also run 465 Holley Avenger, 480 cfm Autolite 4100, 500 cfm Edelbrock, 1957 Carter AFB. The 600 Holley is used by some, but mostly in 312 and above engines with performance upgrades. If you call Holley about the issue, they very probably will also say it is a problem of over carburetion.
About 12 years ago I first tried putting a 600 cfm on my new 292. It didnt work well.
Keep in mind that Summit has very little experience with Y's. In the future you should check with the Y's-guys at yblocksforever.
Can't turn the idle any lower than what? How do you mean you can't turn it any lower? The adjuster screw is all the way out so the throttle can't possibly be closed any further?
Possible causes:
Ignition timing too advanced, vacuum leak, linkage incorrectly adjusted, carburetor not tuned properly, bad carburetor.
A 600 is generally too large for a stock 292 but since you have it and are already using it, see if you can resolve the issue. If it is the carb, you may be able to tune it out reasonably well.
Yeah, cool wagon Y-blockhead! My '55 4 door wagon needs resto, and the '53 needs to find a home with someone crazy, as it needs a lot of sheetmetal attention. The '53 should be listed on ebay within a week. Spent today getting the shop area reordered to be able to move the '55 inside, where it is now. The station wagon has a 292 with 4V and air cooled Fordo. The engine even turns over. I should get the '46, '53, and '55 lined up so all the front ends point to the door, and take a pic.
According to some people, the '53 Ford Courier Sedan Delivery is considered a truck, eventhough it is on a car frame. So here is a pic:
