It really can be. At times. Just popped south across the line a couple times last month to pick up parts. There's a guy living 3 miles south of the border that uses his garage as a shipping point. I get a lot of stuff sent there as it ends up costing a LOT less for shipping and the cost of parts down there is usually significantly cheaper. Just saved $100 on a lawn mower part as opposed to getting it locally. Local guy wanted $150. Guess what I paid in your fine country? 
Actually only got hassled on the US side this time. Shipping stuff across is completely hit and miss.
