From my experience as a dumb private when I got to my unit, I left my weapon in a classroom. I was only 10 ft out the door when I realized it, and had a mini panic attack. Unfortunately, my NCO had already spotted it.....that was a fun evening/morning/evening/morning/evening/morning....yeah...
Just thinking about leaving my weapon somewhere makes me shiver.
Yea, this reminded me of a conversation I had with my USMC 2nd Lt cousin--I asked him if anyone ever "lost" a rifle while on one of their training exercises, etc. His reply: "God help you if you lose your rifle...".
Could have been a literal "God help you" in this case. I don't understand how this happened, but I'm confident it will be followed up or covered up properly....
My dad once told me that when he was in the Army in Germany in the late 50's they were out in the forest on maneuvers and he left his rifle leaning against a tree, didn't realize it till they got back to base. That night he snuck out, borrowed (stole) a jeep from the motor pool and drove back to the forest to find it right where he'd left it. Didn't get caught, but it could have been ugly...
My grand Dad fought in Italy from late 43 - early 45.........The first thing they did was to THROW AWAY (Officially lost in combat zone) their M-1 Carbines, and procured M-1 Garand rifles...........another thing in war.

M1 carbine--loved in house to house close quarters, hated in woods and jungles, so said the two quotes in the National Rifleman a while back. I won't be throwing my Rockola made one away, as the Garand is right next to it.....
Nor, for the record, will I be leaving them on the trunk of the car.....
