just the opposite.
the more air you push into the engine, the less unburnt fuel there is-less black smoke.
you need to turn up the fuel to get boost, but you don't go crazy with it.
just because you have a turbo, doesn't mean you have to raise the fuel so much that you roll coal.
its said a light grey haze under load is normal.anymore than that is wasted fuel with no increase in performance.
im sure setup for the max, they may smoke a bit on the low end too before she spools up,but no.you don't have to look like a red neck.
I've got a 6.9 with an OEM turbo and 3" down pipe. I've got it studded with ARP's and I've got it set to 10-11psi. She stays just under 1,000* EGT with a light haze now. I can turn the fuel up a bit more to get more boost but then my temps get high and I have to keep an eye on it when towing hills etc so I backed it off a tad. I was running 14-15PSI for a bit. Not really much of a difference in power though I don't think between the 10/11 and 14/15 due to the IAT.
You can hear mine 2 blocks away from what my buddy logan says when my dad would get on it lol. Im running the stock turbo up-pipe and crossover, but a 3" Downpipe w/ 3" exhaust....need to get a bigger one tbqh.
84....he already said 10 times better XD! Eaton, my dad who is 60 with a terrible back put my turbo in.....He couldnt do the piping but did all the top end work. I say if my 60 year old dad who is not meant for it anymore can do it....so can you....
Now how in the world did he do that? I mean really! SHEESH! Please tell us HOW he blew up the ZF5spd. I wouldn't think these engines would or could produce enough HP and torque to blow up a tranny. Break it yes, but BLOW IT UP! WOW! Got any pics? WOW!
i have an ats turbo on my truck 86 6.9 3 inch off turbo all the way to back with a 5 inch tip and i can be heard from over a quarter mile. part of the reason why i have sticker on my back window that says "sounds like a plane pulls like a train" lol. when you put that turbo on make sure you put a pyro meter in and a boost gauge. keep an eye on em for awhile. it aint hard to melt one of these motors if you aint careful. infact i screwed up the other day. my truck got hot i didnt even realize it i just happend to look down at the gauge and the temp was climbing i pull over shut it off well i blew the lower radiator hose and the thermostat was stuck shut i fixed it on the side of the road. i thought i had really messed and im not for sure if i havent yet. i got a new thermostat but the one they gave me was the wrong one so i put it back together with out one and aint got one put back in it yet. im kinda worried that when i put one back in it that its gonna over heat from internal damage or somethin. i know i didnt blow a head gasket or nothin i aint got no leaks from em and the oil is good and aint blowing water out of the exhaust or any white smoke. it just goes to show you that you gotta be careful. and especially when you got em turned up.
Made a 500 mile trip and truck did a whole lot better with turbo it was a good choice the oil line blew but other than that couldn't ask for any better
