Ok fellas I just purchased the truck in my signature. I never realized this problem because I never had the truck in the dark. First the interior lights do not illuminate when the doors are opened. Second when using the key fob to lock the doors the exterior oranges do not flash? The only light that goes on is the rear bed light. Now tomorrow I am going to look at the easiest solution that the bulbs are burnt out or missing. I noticed when I first looked at the truck the hood light was unplugged. Maybe they did this so the lights wouldnt kill the battery?? But that still doesnt explain why the parking lights dont flash with the remote. I believe this truck had a personal plow attached.
Maybe for your interior lights the previous owner disconnected the power to them because the switches in the doors were dirty and got stuck. Not knowing how to turn them off when the doors close, he might have just cut the wire?
Alright now that my high is over from buying this new truck my mind finally works again. Here are the clues to the puzzle so far.
The were no lightbulbs in the interior lamps that come on with the door....hmmmm. Still doesnt explain why the exterior orange lamps wont light up when pressing the lock button on the key fob.
But wait.....the manual states that the lights will not flash and the horn will beep twice when it senses that all the doors are not closed. Sure enough press the lock button twice......BEEP..BEEP.
So these clues are telling me a couple things.
1.) The previous owner took out the light bulbs because they would not turn off with the doors shut, thus killing the battery if left on.
2.) The oranges will not light up due to the truck not sensing that all the doors are closed.
So I will keep plugging away to see if there is a sensor or something missing??? Any ideas?
Spray the door jams with WD-40 real good to see if that cleans out the dirt and frees up the switch inside. As you will notice, these trucks don't have the light switch visible on the door frame like other brand of cars.
The switch for the door (drivers I would guess) may have been disabled. If it was malfunctioning the easiest way to deal with it is to cut the wires at the switch or just unplug it.
I know this because I did it to my '99 Windstar. The interior lights began flickering while driving and it was driving me nuts. The downside is the vehicle has no idea when the door is closed and other nuances may appear.
Well I checked a little in each door and everything was connected. I guess I just bought a possessed vehicle. Wonder if its a computer problem??
For those with crew cabs does the message center tell you if the rear doors are open. Mine only displays if driver or front passenger is open?
Well I called the service department at the dealer and it looks as though the think they can fix the problem on their dime, and also repairing what I think is an exhaust manifold leak, under warranty, that the salesman said "Oh thats just normal" Hopefully they have the tools to figure it out!
