Door lock confirmation
Door lock confirmation
I will start by saying this is a pretty dumb question. When I lock my doors with my FOB I get no confirmation (lights flash) If I press it twice I get the horn to honk. I would like to just have confirmation on the first press of the button. I am pretty sure that on other Ex's that I have driven the parking lights flash with the first press of the lock button.
Is there any way to turn this on or off? I am thinking that the previous owner may have had some aftermarket alarm or remote start that disabled the option. I am looking for advice for turning it back on. I would like to be able to look out the window and see my truck is locking instead of honking the horn and waking the neighbors.
Thanks
EH

I'm only familiar with aftermarket systems working that way. If you want, you can splice in a relay and use the ground pulse from the VSM to honk the horn or flash the lights really easily.

Not sure why it isn't working. My 02 will flash the turn/parking lamps and the rear running lamps with the first push of the fob. I haven't checked the owners manual, but maybe there is a way to get it back to normal. Sounds kinda like a relay somewhere isn't working.
It flashes and honks on the second press of the lock button. I am assuming that there was an aftermarket alarm or remote start in it at one time and the relay was disconnected and/or fried. There is nothing that I can find in the manual. I have a wiring diagram in the shop manual I think. I will deal with it when I get time. I was hoping for an easy fix. Thanks for replying back to let me know that yours have the flash confirmation on the first press.
Door locks
This is from the 2003 service manual
If you have the common problem of a door ajar switch hanging you'll get two chirps of the horn.
Remote Transmitter Lock/Unlocking Control — Locking
The remote control feature requests that all the doors be locked when the LOCK button is pressed. On any press of the lock button with all doors closed: the remote control feature will request one flash of the parking lamps. If any door is ajar, no flash will occur, indicating it locked all the doors but one or more doors are ajar. As soon as the last door is closed, the vehicle will provide the one flash of the parking lamps. If two presses of the lock button are received within three seconds the horn will chirp once, and flash the parking lamps twice to indicate that all the doors are closed and locked. If any door is ajar when the second lock request is received within three seconds of the first, the remote control feature will request the horn chirp twice without flashing the parking lamps to indicate it locked all the doors but one or more doors are ajar. When the ignition is in the RUN or START position, no parking lamp flashes or horn chirp confirmations will occur.

Thanks Rickx. I don't believe that it is a door ajar issue. I haven't had the dome light stay on, or the dash light come on with all of the doors closed. If you can tell me where the relay is for the parking light confirmation I would take that. Otherwise I will look it up when I get to it.
The vehicle security Module (VSM) controls these functions. I can't pinpoint one relay for this function with this manual. It refers to testing the VSM. If it had an after market security system installed previously, the wiring or programming may have been altered.

Both of my trucks work the same way as yours. I just hit the button once when walking away from the vehicle and I can hear the actuators locking the door. I rarely feel the need to hit it twice to get the horn honk.
Do the parking lights flash when you hit the button the first time? I don't have an issue when I am by the truck. It is when it is parked at the end of my driveway, or out the window at work.
No, both of mine are 2000 models and they don't give any kind of honk or flash on the first press of the button.
Cool, then maybe mine is like it is supposed to be. Thanks
You never gave us a year or model
This is from the 2000 service manual and sounds like yours is working properly.
You could hit the panic button and verify all is working correctly.
Principles of Operation
The remote keyless entry system is controlled by the generic electronic module (GEM). The switches are wired directly to the lock/unlock relays and the GEM is wired to the relays in parallel. Pressing a switch to lock or unlock grounds the appropriate lock/unlock coil closing the relay and supplying voltage to the actuator to lock/unlock the doors.
Entering the keypad button sends a ground signal to the GEM. When the code is entered in the correct order the GEM grounds the driver unlock relay coil closing the relay and supplying voltage to the driver door actuator unlocking the driver door only. Pressing 3/4 within 5 seconds of factory code sends another ground signal to the GEM causing the GEM to ground the all door unlock relay coil supplying voltage to the passenger door lock actuators unlocking the passenger doors. Pressing 7/8 9/0 buttons together at any time sends a ground signal to the GEM causing the GEM to ground the all door lock relay coil supplying voltage to all the door lock actuators causing them to lock.
The transmitter sends a signal to the GEM causing the GEM to unlock the driver or passenger doors depending on the button pressed.
When the GEM receives the correct signal from either the keyless entry keypad or the remote transmitter the GEM will then command the interior courtesy lamps and the keypad illumination on.
When the panic function is activated from the remote transmitter, the GEM intermittently grounds the parklamp flash relay and the horn relay coils closing the relays and supplying voltage to both the parking lamps and the horn.
The remote transmitters and the remote keyless entry use a rolling code to prevent the TIC code from being "captured" by a code grabber. The system rolls the counter in the transmitter and in the remote keyless entry every time a remote transmitter button is pressed outside the range of the vehicle the rolling codes will fail to synchronize and the vehicle will stop responding to that remote transmitter. At this point the transmitter needs to be reprogrammed to the system.

Where to get FOB for 2002 EX?
I have a 2002 EX that I purchased used with keyless entry and when locked the alert flashes on the dash. Does this mean it has an alarm? Also, does anyone know where I can get the remote(s). Thanks in advance.
