I just picked up a ford 10.5 from the junk yard from a 2001 Ford Superduty, for a project of mine. It's an "S 136 H" which is nonlocking with 3.73 gear ratio I beleive.
I've never rebuilt a rear end. Can anyone point me in the direction of step by step rebuild materials specific to this rear end. Does a Haynes Manual have the specs and procedure? Are there any other manuals I should be looking into?
also, anyone know if you can buy an axle housing/tube anywhere, I've been looking on the interweb without success. I've been reading that I may be able to narrow the axel by installing a shorter tube on one side.
Xtreme 4x4 show on spike has shown narrowing axles several times with some good general info on whats involved. They usually use a cutoff wheel in a grinder, tack on new knuckles, measure for and order new axles shafts.
One trick is to find a stock axle shaft which is common to be in stock at parts places and cut your axle down to fit that. Then you don't have to order a custom axle shaft when you narrow or when you break it. Takes some research and planning but would be the way to go I think.
Four Wheeler magazine showed a complete rebuild of either a 10.25 or 10.5 a while back - you might troll around their website. There were many photos and a few cautionary notes.
