Hello everyone, Im new to the site, and also new to desiel engines. I have always really liked the 1996, 1997 F250 crew cab short
bed truck, a couple of weekes ago I was given the opprotunity to purchase one for the dirt cheap price of $1500.00.... The truck is a 4X4, power stroke with 268,000 miles on it in pretty good condition. The problem is with the transmision, its an E4OD that doesnt want to shift into overdrive. The guy I purchased the truck from said the OD light was flashing, I have not seen it flashing, but it will not shift into overdrive. Any help you guys could provide me with would be greatly appriciated, if the trans is shot and needs a rebuild I am ok with that, but if there are other things to check out first that could be my problem that may save me an un-needed rebuild that would be even better.... Thanks for any help and input.
Pull codes, the e4od is controlled by the computer. Chances are good that you don't need a rebuild. Codes will give you a starting point. I just solved a shifting problem with my e40d with help from the guys around here. If you don't know how to pull codes do a search on this forum and you will find it. I don't have the link to it but if you do a search you will find it. Then post any codes you get and people here will help you out.
Thanks guys, from what I can find I need a scanner to pull the codes, correct? if this is the case I will have to get a scanner and get back with you on the codes.... Again thanks for the help
Google ford fuel injection and look for how to run a self test. It will tell you how to get codes by counting the flashes from the check engine light. I was having a hard time counting correctly so I got a scanner, makes things a lot easier. Amazon.com has the equus 3145 for around $30. Oh yea I didn't say it before but welcome to FTE.
Guys, the OP can`t use the flashing light method or an OBD1 code reader.
You need to take it to a transmission shop to get any codes or get something like an autoenginuity scanner.
The auto stores that read codes for free won`t be able to get your trans codes either.
Ok guys, sorry it has taken me so long to get back with codes but I have been tied up fixing other problems with the truck and now this transmision problem is the only thing left keeping me from being able to drive my rig. I purchased a scanner and the codes I got are P0603= Powertrain control module keep alive memory (KAM) error... Dont have a clue what this is???? and P0708= Transmision range sensor circuit high input, not sure where to start to fix this problem. Thanks for the help guys, looking forward to getting your responses and assistance.
P0603= Powertrain control module keep alive memory (KAM) error, means you unhooked the battery.
P0708= Transmision range sensor circuit high input, means the TR sensor on the drivers side of the transmission is bad.
