6.0 advice needed

Newb to site. I have a 2006 f250 Crew 4x4 K. Ranch I got a few months back. 166k, no mods ,but couldn't tell you if it has been tuned in past. Anyway, replaced degass bottle today after noticing a crack at the bottom. Refilled coolant to the min. line. Drove the truck to town and back (about 8 miles) and upon returning checked coolant level with truck still running. The coolant was near the bottom of the jug!!!!!!!!!!! I killed the engine and stood watching the bottle wondering what had happened. within 30 seconds the jug level raised back to the min. line. I noticed previous threads stating it should be at Min mark at operating temp. Anyone know if this is normal or a sign of pending doom? Any help will be greatly appreciated.<!-- / message -->

The variability in the level is common - unfortunately I have never seen a good reason as to why it does it.

It's very normal. I had an 04 do the exact same thing yesterday when I was testing it for headgasket failure. Let it warm up, took it for an 8 mile run, popped the hood when I pulled in the driveway and noticed the same thing.....bottle was very low but returned to it's "normal" level within a minute or two. My 04 would have been the exact opposite. I think some of it has to do with the level of the vehicle (nose up/down). It doesn't take much to change the bottle level that way.

Thanks for your reply. If the degass bottle is overflowing is it most likely the egr cooler and oil cooler? No oil in the jug. I ordered the egr delete and new oil cooler kit, and am just wondering if I should go ahead and and do the studs or not. If oil cooler is replaced and egr delete is istalled is there still a likelyhood of blowing a head gasket with stock studs?

the likely hood is always there. i know several people whos trucks were completely stock and they blew head gaskets. if you tow alot the likely hood goes up because the cylender pressure goes up. but then on the flip side i have seen numerous trucks that have lasted for a long time without any problems with head gaskets

Iv seen my coolant leval suck down to usualy when it is hot outside

and Iv also seen it go way up to full mark

I keep my coolant about 1 inch below low mark

my coolant bottle cracked to I think it was from the rise and fall of coolant leval and the pressure from a bad cap not venting like it should when it does this like Tim said fluid leval changes fairly quick when shut off
