Well at 174+k my alt has gone south. Bat light came on, then as I accelerated it flickered and then went off. Later come on and stays on now. Checked voltage across bat while off, 12volts, while on with lights on 12 volts. Should have gone to 13.5 or so. An recommendations on a new alt. I am not looking for anything more than what the stocker was capable of.
I purchased a new one from O'Reilly's. A little more expensive than Ed, but no shipping cost and lifetime warranty. I had one from DB Electrical before that, but it kept drawing my batteries down when it sat for a couple of days. I sent it back for a refund with their "no hassle" one year warranty. Theirs was ~$100 + shipping, but didn't give me nearly the service I expected.
Search for local electrical componet rebuilders. Do your research, look for reputable shops that have alot of good feedback or from around town at your local garages, they should point you in the right direction since they most often use these rebuilders. Mine went out too Terry at 160,000 and got my Alt. rebuilt by a local rebuilder, my new shop recommended them to me and I got a year warranty with it, plus a full parts list what they changed in it, 144.00 out the door. The most important is I wanted to keep my stock Mitubishi altenator, their great reliable units.
I'd also recommend finding a local rebuild shop. I had the OEM Bosch alternator rebuilt on my 96 Passat diesel and it's been rocking along for 3yrs+ now. Cost me $80 for the rebuild. A "replacement" one with lifetime warranty was $150 and nowhere near the quality. Bosch replacement was $300+.
+1 on getting yours rebuilt. I've never had a box store alt or starter make it more than a year. They do stand by the warranty, but i better things to do then change alts every few months. It is also a major hassle getting the parts warranty honored out of town.
I use O'Reileys, no problems with exchanging it the warranty is for life, they are everywhere and it's so easy you can change it in their parking lot in 15 minutes. I just did it yesterday lol.
Would like to rebuild but it's a daily driver and i go back to work tomorrow. Can't keep driving without making more electricity. Maybe I will get a new one and rebuild the oem for a spare.
Good news. I went out and rapped on the back of my alt and it started working again. So I bought myself a little time to figure out where I will get one from or have mine rebuilt.
