Everything is spinning, just not engaged, any time the engine is running.
Lessee'..... Something's spinning under your hood, and it has nothing to hold it in place except a bit of friction in the splines? Your call if that's OK, because it's your truck, and yours to repair.
You sure are one lucky guy if there is truly no bolt holding the plate to the compressor shaft. I just hope you were wrong about the bolt being completely missing.
The bolt is cheap at Ford. A couple of bucks, even from a dealer who is trying to steal from you. Get one anyway!
Well as luck would have it my truck would not start after work. Could the clutch being loose cause the compressor to do something to where it wouldn't start? I know I am asking a lot of questions but you seem to know you stuff.
no they really dont have anything to do with not starting. what was truck doing to not start would it crank low crank first thing i would think is battery. but that is a shot in the dark as i dont know any of the symptoms.
at work we have the 6.7 powerstroke ton trucks and the guy that drives one i hate him and i want to disable the ac system for this summer but i want it to look like no one messed with it. i thought bout just taking the fuse out but that is a easy fix.
Ok a/c wasnt working took it to a mechanic told me the the compressor was missing a clutch he recommended i put a new compressor. Is it possible just to put a new clutch in it and if so do i have to remove the compressor to put the clutch on it. Once again thanks.
My A/C quit working the air gap became too big, use an 8mm socket to remove the bolt in the center, remove the piece it bolts in (not sure what it is called) there will be a small washer, remove the washer and put it back together, it should work fine again.
I know of two 6.0Ls that wouldn't start because the A/C clutch and/or compressor seized and the starter couldn't turn the motor over well/fast enough to start.

I just fixed my Wife's '99 7.3L with 266K on it by removing the one washer/shim that was in it.
Is the clutch just a metal-on-metal deal? I'm assuming so since it's an electo-magnet operation.
Well, mine is anyway and it has wear clear into the rivets.
This is the first time I've ever messed with an A/C system myself. Gear boxes and A/C are the only things I haven't tackled before, kind of cool to fix it for free by using more GREAT info I've gleaned off of the site.
2003 6.0 4x4 lwb, 216800 miles- My ac began to act up by blowing hot air when outside temps get high last summer and then again last month. Noticed no bolt on clutch plate so I bought one and installed with no luck of turning. Removed 1 spacer that i could see and noticed 1 rubber weight and rivet was worn out in the middle. I put it back on to see if it would kick on and nothing. 2 days ago it was working in morning and at start up in afternoon. i'm replacing the clutch plate before i go to a shop. do u need special puller to get to the magneto. are there any pics around here showing steps to replace the front of compressor? The location is down low on passenger side Any advice would help and i have read many threads about springpop tap and spacer trick.

Just an FYI, 6.0Ls can get a no-start condition when the A/C compressor gets so hard to turn that the starter can't turn it fast enough to get it to "fire."
I think one of my '03s has that problem right now. You're right that compressor looks like a b!+ch to get at.
