im in the market for a new (or new to me) vehicle and i decided i want a 08 or newer subaru outback, i think. i havent had a chance to look at them in person yet but i like them. they are awd and sit fairly low. subarus seem to last forever and i plan to keep it a long time.
i was wondering if any of you own one and what your opinions are of them?
My brother in law, who can afford what he wants, leased one a couple years ago--it was a wagon, not sure which one. So happy with it, he turned in the lease and bought a new one earlier this year. -0- problems.
I can tell you. I worked with a guy who had a Subaru Brat. He rolled it one day on the way to work. He managed to get it to the job site, where we cut the top off, ( since it was smashed down). He actually ended up driving it for over a year with no windshield, basically nothing above the doors for well over 3 years). And it was only til the local cops were fed up with it, not because the Brat wasn't able to keep going.
Seems like they have a real following. My problem is not the car but the people driving them. They mostly frequent 2 lane roads in la la land. They don't seem to be in a hurry to get anywhere. Grrrr.
I really like all the subarus. The Outback is a pretty nice package too. Decent amount of space behind the rear seats, good rear legroom. The Forester is nice if you don't require the cargo space.
Not super fast cars, and some people think they are ugly, but heck, I think they are exactly what most SUV drivers actually need. I'm considering an Outback as my wife's next car.
i really like the idea of having a fair amount of space in the hatch area. i recently became wheelchair-bound and i want a 4 door, awd car, the rear hatch area seems like an advantage because theres plenty of room for the chair for when i have 3-4 other people in the car. i rolled up next to an older one(2000ish) in the parking lot today and the height looks pretty good with seat height compared to wheelchair seat height.
this will be my first vehicle since my accident, and i want something that will last a while and be easy to get into. i currently can get into my parents 07 mitsubishi outlander which is a crossover but its kinda high for me. i will also be keeping my 95 f150, but it is WAAY to high for me at the moment, ill work my way up into it eventually
My BIL in Maine works on them all the time. He says they are tough as nails but you have to be very religious about timing belt / water pump changes. It clearly makes no sense to change one and not the other. He also mentions how nice the external transmission filter and drain plug are compared to American cars that aren't equipped that way.
yeah, if the hieght is a big issue for you, then they are a good idea. The Legacy rides lower than the outback, and it's basically the same car. Although i think they may have discontinued the legacy wagon. Not sure if a sedan works for you.
Frod Edge and Escape are good choices, but possibly too tall.
well i done did bought one today, 07 outback with 45800 miles. its kinda a funky green color, got power drivers seat, sunroof, heated seats, heated mirrors and the bottom of the widshield has a defroster built in. 2.5liter 4 banger boxer and 5 or 6 speed auto, not sure. ride height is great for me, now i just need hand controls installed so i can drive the dang thing!
i originally looked at an 09 with 43700 miles but when i went in to look into buying it today it wasnt on the lot. ****. talk to the salesman, he says its out on a test drive right now, and were 90% sure its sold to that guy... sure as *****, other guy had his papers signed before i got back from my test drive in the 07. oh well, i love the one i bought
