I have installed a '79 F-350 4x4 axle on a '90 E-350 van and I need to verify the gear ratio.
I have not been able to find a tag on the axle housing and have a number from the ring gear. The problem is that I am not sure what this number is stating.
12 13 73 DANA 620108A A30D304-10
Can anyone tell if this gives me enough information to determine the ratio?
It looks like 3.73, but never use 4wd if the axle ratios arnt the same, they must be within 1% of eachother. An easy way to get an idea as to what it is, get the front tires in the air and put a mark on the driveshaft so you can see it from the tire. Turn the tire once, and if the shaft turns 3 and 1/2 times it's around 3.55. If it's between 3 and 1/2 and 4, it's probably 3.73. If it's more than 4 times, but less that 4 and 1/2, it's probably 4.10s...etc etc.
Primary rig is Green Thunder:
95' F-150 XLT 4x4, 302, 5 spd, MSD 6A, Flowmaster Exhaust, Sunroof, Clear corners w/ Diamond headlights, CD player with 2 10" subs and some 32" BFG Muds .

If it's an open diff, you need to jack up only one wheel on on the axle and turn it 2 revolutions and count the driveshaft revs. If it's a limited slip you jack up both wheels and turn them through 1 revolution.
Have you driven the van in 4 wheel yet? If so, and your truck isn't dead yet, just look at what the rear is. Has to be the same.
