Fuel Delivery Question
I have an '84 4.9L that won't start unless I pour gas straight into the carburetor (after several attempts). And even after that it will only run for about an hour before if stalls. At that point it won't start even when I pour fuel into the carburator. I have to let it sit for several hours first, then I can pour fuel in and it will start (again, after several attempts). At first I thought it might be the fuel pump, so I replaced it (and the spark plugs) but that didn't help. Now I'm considering replacing/rebuilding the carburator, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what else could be causing this before I replaced the carburetor.

Before you buy more parts, pull the computer codes. Unless your truck has been converted from the "dreaded feedback carburetor" it'll have a computer under the dash and an orange connector under the hood, next to the battery. Most AutoZone or O'Reilley's auto parts stores can do this for free. if they can't, you can do it yourself, see here:
