hey everybody whatsup. I am the new owner of a 2000 ranger with a 3.0 6cyl with auto trans. Right after i bought the truck i noticed the oil is leaking. It looks like its coming from the rear main seal. How can i know for sure if thats what im looking at or is it coming from somewhere else?
Assuming that it is the rear main, how tough of a job is it to tackle?
Thanks yall rock
Look higher up on the engine for other leak sources. The oil pressure sending unit is mounted on the top-rear of the block. They can leak copious amounts of oil when defective. The rocker arm covers could be seeping, but not as likely.
If it is the rear main seal, you have to drop the transmission and remove the torque converter and flex plate to gain access to the seal. Not a 1/2 hour job, for sure.

I checked out behind and on top of the block after i ran it back from school this morning, and it is all dry. Considering I do not have to tools or space to drop a tranny it looks like im just going to have to breakdown and take it to a shop.
Thanks for the help
Seth
One other thing to check is the PCV system. If the PCV is blocked, you can develop pressure in the sump that will force vapor out the weakest spot, and possibly carry oil with it.
