Sounds like you have a lot of air trapped in the system.

I suppose its possible that a faulty ground could also cause odd sensor readings. May want to look into that as well.

Stumped on p1299 code

Hi! New member with some trouble. We have a 2003 F-150 super crew with the triton V-8.<148,000> all fluids good, changed the thermostat. Checked code P1299. Understand the why, but what do I replace? Temp. sending unit? Sensor on the cylynderhead? Not as easy as my '68 Taledaga I had in high school.

I would recommend making a new thread in the F-150 or the 5.4 V8 section.

Just wanted to ressurect this thread-
I have a 2000 Ford Excursion 5.4, same issues as everyone else-

Ford dealership tried to screw me, they recommended radiator, 02 sensor, and the guage sensor, and thermostat-

I paid them the 70 bucks for the eval, then I replaced all of the parts, still no luck. I took it to my buddy who is strictly a chevy dude, he checked it out for a few days, and came back and said 9 times out of 10 in his expereince, I have a cracked head.

I am now looking to replace the engine. Any thoughts or updates?

BTW still reading 1299 overhed temp guage, still getting limp mode after 10 minutes of driving, still runningt hot, after a restart it all goes away

I just had this exact problem last month and all signs pointed to bad head gasket at first.

I pressure tested my system and it held 18 lbs of pressure for over 30 mintues so I decided to test my pressure cap for the radiator just to check it.....No pressure was held at all.

I flushed the system and replaced the thermostat since it needed it anyway, AND put a new cap on the system and have not had any problems since. Code p1299 has not come back yet either.

Me too...

I have a 2000 Navigator with 190k. I get all the problems. Temp gauge flies up, temp light comes on, and if I don't turn the engine off and restart, it will go into limp mode.

Usually, when I restart it, the gauge goes right back to normal.

I have not recently done any work to it, It doesnt seem to matter what the outside temp is. The first time I had it happen was pulling a pretty heavy trailer with a bad ground (as mentioned in this string earlier), but now it happens almost every time I drive it.

I found a fix for the false overheat. The cylinder head temperature sensor caused my issue with the gauge spiking and engine going to safe mode. If your sensor is on the left bank front (driver's side) it can be replaced without removing the intake manifold. Let me know and I'll tell you how to replace it.

Just wanted to add on top of the code, I am now unable to start my excursion- I try to crank it up and nothing, both starter and alternator are in good shape? Anybody have any suggestions?

I hate to say it but this truck has been a headache since I got it
