Voodoo OIL

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
This is truly perplexing to me. I have an 03 6.0 PSD. I am Mr. contentious about changing the oil, every 3K +- a hundred or two. I have determined now that after every single oil change (Rotella BTW) that the truck runs extremely rough it feels like it is injector related and will chug and blow smoke (usually white-grey) Once the truck has been running for awhile maybe 30-40 minutes it will settle down. It will go through the same process for about a month and then it starts to gradually subside until it disappears about 1000-1500 miles into. I had thought initially that it was a fuel additive to I use about every 3rd tank to provide a little lubrication to the injectors, However this last go round I laid off the additive for several tanks, took it in for oil change and the same thing. I have even tried different service stations. So there it is, I would love to hear any thoughts or feedback.<o></o>

Thanks <o></o>

Does the 6.0L use the oil pressure to power the injectors like the 7.3L did? If so you could be getting air in the system. One thing you can do is go to synthetic and don't change it as often. I can't see why something that hold 15 quarts of oil would need changing every 3k. Fill your oil filter all the way to the top with oil and that will eliminate a lot of the air in the system.

What additives?? You shouldnt be really using additives on a 6.0 unless its cetane booster from ford or REV-X which cures stiction.. BTW, oil chances in 6.0s should be every 7500 as ford states.. But people on the 6.0 forums state every 5k. And i wouldnt take a 6.0 to a oil change place BTW.. Very bad idea. 6.0s like OEM filters.

Thanks for the input, i will be changing the oil myself from here moving forward as far as the additive it was lucas as suggested by our heavy dump f750 diesel mechanic I have since learned that third party research shows Lucas does not help the situation. I have read abouy Rev-X and will likely give it a try

I was also under the impression that additive was pretty important in earlier models due to the change in formulation of diesel post 2007

thanks

You may want to read this article about Stiction:

When it comes to oil, I got my education here: - Bob is the Oil Guy

If it were mine I would go to a synthetic and change it every 10K. You can have an oil analysis done by Blackstone labs and they will tell you if your oil change interval (OCI) is too long or too short. The stiction issue that fishinthe box posted a link for would get better with synthetic oil. bobistheoilguy.com rocks and you can learn a lot there.

Thanks for the informtion and article link. Reading it has been an education all it's own.

I will be making some changes to routine maintenance for sure. Is there a favorable opinion with the use of a synthetic oil coupled with Rev-X?

I would love to hear more about Rev-X. I've heard some people speak to it, and I know Innovative Diesel recommends it. But for every article I read about it, I could find 10 that say never add anything to the oil in a 6.0. If you find some empirical data to support using it in any effects, please pass it along.

i absoultely will pass along any findings as i am now methodically tracing every step that i take at 200k miles it feeling like home. i will post a very interesting link in the morning about a comparison of additives and the composite results. I should have my order of Rev-x in a day or so. cant wait to see what it does.

Id deff try rev-x. I did with very great results. But nothin and i mean nothin can cure a classical case of stiction.. Just a new set of injectors. Rev-X makes livin with stiction alot easier. Down the road, youll need a injector or two or 8 replaced.

Back to changin the oil. I wouldnt wait 10k on a 6.0. Even on a 7.3, but especially a 6.0. The injectors on a 6.0 rely soly off of clean fuel and clean oil. You wanna take care of your 6.0 and its injectors, do your maintenance on time.

Oil change ever 5k
Fuel Filters every 10k or 15k depends if you qualify for servere service or not.

Id deff stay on top of your maintenance. As a 6.0 can cost upwords of $10-15 grand and a injector is 300 or 400 a piece. BTW, use 5W40 Rotella T-6 for oil change and OEM Oil filters and Fuel filters

Post your results for Rev-X! It dont work for everyone, but not everyone has a case of stiction. Hope it works for u with great results..

Ditch the Dino Rotella. My 04 and my 05 had problems with the ''romps" until I switched oils. Something in the Rotella that many have had the same problem with. I run Schaeffer's synthetic now and have zero issues. Rotella syn or Valvoline Blue have had good reports also.

Cheers!

I like Rotella, use it in my X and my classic car. I wouldnt switch to syntetic in my case, not with 140K anyway. No problems with the Rotella though.

As mentioned, this report has been circled around a few times however i did find it to be a very interesting read.

feel free at your leisure to review www.johnfjensen.com/Diesel_fuel_additive_test.pdf

I should get the Rev-X monday and will update the results. The more i hve researded and learned of stiction the more evident it becomes.

Is there an injector cleaner so to speak or just the nature of the beast? clean oil and fuel filters the best medicine taken as a given.

Update

Well, as I mentioned I would get back with the my results when I added REV-X. My shipment arrived yesterday as expected. So before leaving to go home from work I added the recommended 8 ounces to the oil. I started her up and not a single misplaced or out of the ordinary sound, sputter gurk or gag. I wanted to be sure that it was not a fluke since I had drove the truck about two hours prior and it was still warm. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

This morning still remaining hopeful but admittedly a little skeptical, It started and run like a champ. I was waiting the entire 30 mile commute but not so much as a bump or blip. To that end I declare the product an absolute success for my particular situation. Despite the price, it will become a regular part of my maintenance regiment. <o></o>
<o></o>
I hope this helps others with this problem and I appreciate everyone’s valuable input <o></o>

Many Thanks<o></o>

If that is the case, why do the band-aid thing? Why not just fix it once and for all? Maybe there is something wrong with the injectors and it might not hurt to R&R them for testing. On my diesels, I would yank the injectors ever 100K and on my gas car, ever 3 years for cleaning and testing. IF they find something that can be fixed, fine. If not, you may have to replace the set. Either way, I don't see the point of band-aids except to get you home.
