Speedometer troubleshooting
Can I do any circuit checks on my 96 F250 speedometer head? I have a jumpy needle, erratic shifting, and dying problem that i hear may be caused by a bad PSOM. I am handy with a multimeter, but dont really know where to probe or what to look for. The prospects of finding a "known good part" here are gonna be slim to none, so I'd like to fix mine if I can or at least prove it's good or bad. Thanks.

Just look for bad caps and loose components on the board.
That is about all you can do without subing it out.
On the other hand you could check the signal coming from the generator on the rear end.

These problems (you can look at my previous posts) started when I removed the cluster in an effort to access the Trans shifter tubes. Didn't give me access like i hoped and of course Murphy's law works good and another problem reared it's evil head. The needle bounces, transmission hangs up in high rpm before it shifts, and it lunges and dies when it barely starts rolling in reverse or drive. I replaced the VSS in rear diff, and I didn't trace the wires to it since this all started when I removed cluster. It is my luck.

This is to answer all my old posts. The 96 F250 7.5l is fixed! I appreciate all the suggestions everyone gave me, but by reading this forum I thought maybe the Speedometer PCOM or POCM was at fault. I managed to find a used unit and swapped it in. Does not lunge and die when I shift into gear, speedo needle is dead on calm (no bouncing), shifts at the right rpm and doesn't hang up at 3000rpm, and wierdest of all, idles better. To Everyone....thanks. And thank you to the creater(s) of this forum.
