What are the odds of a truck with this engine in it having 180,000 miles on it and it still being susceptible to the inherent flaws associated with this motor?
Basically looking at 2 different trucks one with 170k and the other with 190k both 6.0 engines at dealerships where they were traded in. If it runs well and the oasis checks out but does not show the mods that make the engine reliable is this a breakdown waiting to happen or if it has not happened up to that point then odds are good that you are safe? both trucks are 2005 model year.
Also how many miles is it safe to say these engines are good for?
from what i have been told from other owners here is that to make sure you get gauges as soon as possible and you can prevent most of the major problems...i got the edge insight cs and have been monitoring ever since i bought it, the only problem i have had is the FICM and mine has 178,000 right now. As far as the miles the engines are good for, i just talked to a guy recently who has over 490,000 on his 04 6.0 and it is still running strong, just have to make sure you do regular maintenance religously i.e. oil changes filters etc..
I traded my 08 Dodge Hemi 22k miles (no problems just like new) for a f350 6.0 69k miles in 8 days it was back to the ford dealer and spent 3 weeks in the shop getting the usual stuff- new oil cooler new egr cooler new head gaskets new puke tank new this and a couple of new that's. I also was out $500.00 for the ARP stud install. Now I know you are about to ask why did I trade? I thought the f350 6.0 would give me more power to tow and not break down you know diesels last forever and don't break! Well I was wrong but I still like the F350 just hope I don't have to shoot it like the other trucks that have pissed me off! Who ever bought my Ram got a really good truck.
Vehicles are traded on a daily basis, if you are spending your last penny on a high mileage vehicle and cannot afford a repair....walk away. One guy may have treated his truck like gold, the other like crap. If I had a crystal ball I could tell you more.
Leave enough room to replace the engine and transmission, steering components and tires in the future. What I am saying, buy cheap enough to take on what comes ahead in the future. Friend of mine picked up a 2003 with 345k on the ticker, changed oil, fuel filters and smoked the FICM so far. That truck looks in brand new condition and the previous owner took care of it.
