Base Timing

Does anybody know the timing for the 460 in the 73-79. Should be located on the sticker inside of your engine compartment. Mine is gone... Got a real bad timing and carb issue. So this would help.

Ditto on the same question just for reference myself. Did a 460 swap and never had a sticker.

Thanks. Its not factory but I'm not sure what size cam is in it or anything else. I put a stock distributor in it and it runs, but it backfires like crazy and te carb is out of tune. I just figure stock might be a better starting point then guessing. If you have any suggestios I'm all ears. Thanks

yea if you knew what cam you had you should be able to figure out what to set the timing too. From what i've been told and i'm gonna take a guess that it would be similar for you 460, a good total timing for an FE like my 390 is like 32-36 degrees. To see what your total is, take a timing light and have someone rev up the engine till the numbers stop going up, then while the gas is being held at that rpm, turn the distributor till it shows 32-36 degrees. Then you can know what the initial is (at idle) so set it for later on if needed to. You can start fine tuning the timing from there also to see where it runs best and doesn't ping.

What carb are you using?

some may say this is a horrible reference point but, in a perfect world with a new timing chain and you have turned the motor over verifiying TDC you should put the distributor in with the rotor button of course pointing to the number one post on the distributor and where I am going with this is that the vacum advance pod should be pointing towards the radiator or slightly towards the passenger side.
This is by no means where you should leave it as its just to get you started cause I do not have the exact answer you are asking for but with that and your carb adjusted for max vac you should be able to dial the distributor in with the engine at about 2k rpms while listening for smooth running conditions out of the tail pipes, bring it back to idle shut it down and see if it will crank back up if you get some kick back simply turn the distributor back a hair till she fires.

Sorry didnt see the carb question at the bottom. Its an 850 cfm vacum secondary mechanical choke dual feed. Its old... replaced the baffle and mixture screws as well as the gaskets.

its not an carter style edelbrock is it? those seem to be easy to tune so get on that. I mean rev the engine up until the timing numbers on the balancer stop rising. That could be anywhere from like 2500-4k+ but probably around 3,500. Not red line.

The carb was built for Edelbrock before they started making their own carbs. The carb is a pain in the butt... But I think I got a good link for adjusting the float now, then I can tackle the mixture. Buddy of mine said for the mixture just tweak until I get brown coloring on the spark plugs. If theres an easier way I'm all ears. Appreciate all the help so far

To adjust to two mix screws on the front, back them out 2 full turns with the engine off. Then start the engine and then one screw at a time, turn it in slowly until the engine starts to stumble, and back it off about a 1/4 to a half a turn. Same goes for the other screw. Then adjust your idle to where you want.

Sounds good. One last thing,I do not have a pressure regulator installed but the pump is an aftermarket 4-7 Psi. Should I bother installing one?

My 460 ran best at 12* BTDC with the vacuum hooked up to the ported vacuum port on the carb.

12* BTDC at idle correct? How about around 3k rpms? Was it about 32-36. Was your 460 built?
