79 f100 ranger 351m automatic short bed, 2x2. I have searched first I promise. This is my problem. I bought truck from a man who said she needed a new carb, well it turns out that all that was needed to be adjusted was the choke thermostat was turned so far the wrong way that the butterfly was stuck wide open, problem solved. Now I find that the starter would engage while I was driving so I suspect the selonoid was the problem. I replaced it with a duralast and made sure it was grounded to the fender by sanding the paint/rust. I went to turn it over and the selonoid clicked then smoked.... Now I put the old one back in and still have nothing. I called customer service for the duralast to verify that I connected the power correctly, and question the smoke and was told it was wired right but the smoke was on me to figure out.... Friends please tell me what I broke... I am stuck.
If you saw something smoke in that area I am going to say either your selonoid, ground wire, positive wire, starter wire, or starter has been fried. It could be any of those. This happened to us before. If I remeber right we had to replace the starter wire and ground wire. It might be one thing or it might be two things could be any combination really. Hope this helps somehow. (I would replace the wires first.)
If your starter was engaging while driving I would look the possibility 12V is being applied to the "S" term when it's not susposed to be. First thought would be ignition switch. Make sure the start function is still working. If voltage is not reaching the solenoid, no solenoid is going to work.
