hi, im back to truck problems today..
truck started running bad/loud and then died.
when i turn on the ignition it sounds normal,
but then all silent after a few seconds...
(usually i hear it pumping until i start it)
so, i figured its the fuel pump.
i even checked the 20a fuse and its good.
so now, i get a new pump but it only has 2 wire
clips, mine has 3.
i tried it anyway and it doesnt work.
parts guy seems to think there is only 1
fuel pump for all 6.0s.....
any help??????
my truck is a 2004 built in february..
thanks
FWIW, don't worry about the missing electrical plug on the new pump. Your old pump had a fuel heater, and the new one's do not. Ford found they aren't necessary.
Early 6.0L engines had 3 connectors to the HFCM (Horizontal Fuel Conditioner Module, which contains the fuel pump).
One was power to the fuel pump, one was power to the fuel heater and one was for the water in fuel sensor.
Later models eliminated the fuel heater and all replacements HFCM's came without the fuel heater. I believe their was a dummy plug made for the fuel heater connection but I don't know how you got one.
Did you check the fuel pump power connector to see if there was power there? The pump should be powered for about 20-30 seconds after you turn on the key and then it is shut off if the engine isn't started.
The fuel heater connector is brown, the fuel pump connector is grey and the water in fuel sensor connector is black. According to my service manual.
wow thanks alot!
i couldnt find that info anywhere!
im almost positive theres no power getting
to the fuel pump. ive been listening to that
thing prime for years!! and now nothing.
plus my tester is at work...
and if its not the fuse i really dont know what
the hecks goin on??
maybe the wire is compromised, but i would
think the fuse would break??
Did you check the fuel cutoff switch? It's behind the passenger side kick panel. There is a little hole with a plug in it, take out the plug and reach in there and you'll find the switch. There is a push button on the top to push down to reset it.
just checked cutoff and its not triggered.
so i unpluged it and tried but still nothing.
then i noticed the fuse is burnt!
not sure when this happened and am almost
positive it wasnt cooked earlier?
i found another pair of testers, my spares
behind the seat! duh..
im not getting any power @ the fuse panel.
i replaced the burnt fuse and tried but still
no power...
im guessing that its gonna take some closer
inspection tomorrow but just thought id see
if anyone else has been through this.
thanks again
There will only be power to the fuel pump for 20 seconds after the key is turned on, unless the engine is started.
There is also a fuel pump relay, but there is some question in my service manual about where that relay is. It may be an integral part of the fuse panel.
well, this morning i now have power @ the fuse
and the pump is working.
i hope its just a short in the wire going to
the pump, so im gonna replace that harness.
not sure why this would cut power to the 20a
fuse in the panel tho....
thanks fellas!
