Ok so I found a deal I just couldn't pass up. While driving to new mexico I spotted a bronco sitting in a wash. I pulled over to check it out and look it over. This thing wasn't the straightest but it was totally intact. The rear fenders weren't even cut. The problem is its missing everything from the motor to the axles. I converted my f100 to 3/4 ton drivetrain so I have a leafsprung dana 44 and 9 inch sitting in my backyard. Has anyone done this?
Yes, just bout everything's been done to the EB over the 45 yrs.
At the min it will B wider. Leafs will hafta B moded or converted to springs. Both driveshafts modded. Not sure how the EB trany tunnel has been adapted for the F150. There R threads on conversions on the net. Some of "the clubs": Broncofix, CB, pirate 4X4, Ohiobronco, Lonestar, many of the EB vendors would love to help (sell prts 2 U, advise) etc.
Keep talkin 2 us, there's some guys on here (not many as w/the other forums) that have experience w/EB. Hope 13 posts is not too late to welcome you...and howdy! I think 7 more posts & U can put up some pic. We LOVE pic!
If you are wanting to build it for offroad only, doing a "full width" swap is desirable. Lot of modifications involved as Chad posted. If wanting to ever drive it on the street you will have a hard time getting the tires covered as most state laws require.
I'm gonna have to cut the axles down. The 44 is out of an f250, it has a spring pad cast into the diff housing so the passenger axle would stick out further. I was thinking about fabbing a setup like the f250s have. Just a bolt on front hanger and a shackle through the frame. I wanted to see if anyone had any better ideas or tips on this. I kinda just transferred over from the 73-79 forum haha
The leaf spring front is not a very popular conversion for an early Bronco. Your front spring hanger will be way out there killing approach angle. classicbroncos.com is going to be the best source for the tech advice and reasoning about doing this swap. I searched thru the threads, but couldn't nail down one that actually showed the whole process. Just bit's and pieces of different threads. Don't get me wrong, totally doable. Good luck.
Thanks guys. I know coils are superior to leafs. But its what I have layin around ya know? I'm not lookin to build a crawler just a fun toy. I'll keep you guys posted.
Before you go crazy and end up with a head scratcher.... I would do this: look on craigslist or swap meets for the suspension parts you need. At the end of the day if will spend as much time an money getting what you have into the truck as you would tracking down some stock stuff to put in.
If U wanna "1 tun" frnt end conversion (I'm tryin to figure out this mod but HAVE the EB D44 in there, oe) how bout just the "outters". Like Boba sez get those prts (Bronco springs etc) and add the F250 knucks out to it. Seems like it'd B a much better rig. Hafta shorten the tubes/axles tho, I guess (slang is 'full width"). I wonder how much would stick out each side? The stock's only bout 6 feet lock out tip to tip (not including whatever tires are used).
The f250 axle ihas half ton outers. I swapped the 3/4 ton stuff onto my truck. I have the whole suspension setup together out of the truck I got the parts from. I was gonna make the stock setup work. The axle has flat tops so it would be nothing to run cross over. Greers about 150 miles from farmington I believe
I'm not sure what's what with your parts (sorry for my ignorance). Different yrs also appear to have 1/2 & 3/4 ton variation. U might B more familiare with these than I due to '73 - 79 your forum participation.
f250 axle ihas half ton outers
I think the knuckle, hub/rotor, spindle (8 lug), caliper to B interchangeable on ANY D 44?
swapped the 3/4 ton stuff onto my truck
I'm confused again. This is in ("my truck") another vehicle, not the bronk?
I have the whole suspension setup together out of the truck I got the parts from.
This is what will B modded for the bronk?
cross overs
Didn't think U could easily weld on cast iron (axle tubes). May B I don't understand "cross overs".
THANKS for locating Greer. I'm gunna assume my friend in Durango is safe. Seems from the radio the fires R finally getting under control, as U mentioned.
Tasss a good ting!!
I'm pretty sure he's safe lol. I'm not sure about the EB 44 but I know most 44 parts are interchangeable depending on years and models. All knucks are anyway. Sorry for not clarifying earlier but I swapped the 3/4 outers onto my pick up. I got a 76 f100. Yeah I was planning on modding the suspension setup I acquired to fit in the bronk. I mean high steer lol
