I have a 2003 F350 6.0L with a torq shift transmission and 188,000 miles. I have been driving it for one year, not sure of the history. Last week the transmission temp gauge started going crazy. It would go back and forth and shifting became very erratic and hard. Sometimes it just stays pegged, even when cold, and the shifting is close to normal, only a little hard. when it goes up and down the shifting goes crazy. Putting the shifter in one gear will hold it in that gear ok. the tow/haul indicator light also flashes and the 'check gauge' light comes on. The fluid was near the bottom of the ok area on the dip stick. I added almost a quart of Lucas transmission additive and it seems to shift ok but the gauge stayes almost at the bottom. Have not driven but a few miles. could this be the transmissiom temp sending unit (or what ever they call it these days)? Can It be serviced from the outside?

First off, you need to find out what codes it's giving you.(tow/haul light flashing) In the future I'd only use Mercon SP or LV. How does the fluid look/smell? Id also recommend not driving it till you figure out whats goin on.
