Now the tranny

Hi Guys

My '01 F250 CC is gushing ATF between the bell housing and tranny. No go forward, I still have some reverse. Any ideas? Someone mentioned front pump seal and said that they are very sensitive to being disturbed. I had to have the engine pulled in Jan to replace the oil pan since we cannot make an oil pan that won't rust through (another story). Could this have contributed?

Also, can anyone share the RR procedure for the tranny?

Thanks in advance
Pat

Were you towing before the tranny started puking? Could it of possibly overheated? If they overheat, they can puke fluid out of the front seal. I suppose if you lost enough fluid, you would have drive issues. Just a thought.

I can't see it being related to the engine pull. And I can't tell you the amount of times over the years unrelated troubles happened either during another problem or just after. It's easy to think one thing caused another. Just seems to happen that way.

IIRC the front seal can leak when hot, then be fine again when cooled. Newer replacement seals are a different material which solved this. x2 on loss of fluid for the no go problem. My 2 cents is... once the trans is cool, fillerup with Mercon V and let us know if you've been lucky or not.

I'd be willing to bet it's the seal to the TC.

Thanks guys

I was actually taking the truck with my plow on it to a friends shop. His son is going to sandblast and paint the plow for me. It was a warm day and the first time I drove with the plow at that temp. So it is possible that maybe it overheated. It's been there since Saturday. I am going up tomorrow to check it. He has a construction company and said he would have his mechanic take a look at it. Since you guys have a lot of experience I thought I could give the mechanic some insight into common causes.

How bad is it to pull the tranny if that has to happen? It's a 4WD CC with log box. Another shop had to pull the engine to swap the oil pan out. I also had to change the dipstick tube and both exhaust manifolds that rotted out. Courtesy of upstate NY rock salt roads.

Does anyone have the RR procedure. The mechanic that is going to check it is a heavy equipment guy not truck. The good thing is my buddy has a lift in the shop.

Thanks again
Pat

PS I read that if it is a seal on the pump there is an aftermarket "Vitron?" seal that is better than the stock one. Any thoughts on that? Where can I get one?

The improved seal is made from Viton. Anywhere that sells transmission parts should have it.
