66 Turn Signal, Flasher, Brake Switch: Need Some Help
Hi all,
I am in the process of finishing up (for now!) after doing a major upgrade (power steering, power brakes, disc brakes, rust removal in from the cab). I need to make a bracket and install the 79 brake switch, stock turn signal, and a flasher.
I have done my research and it seems like the only diagram I can find floating around on the internet is not extremely helpful. Most thread responses are statements that go like: "Just connect so-and-so color wire to yada-yada color wire."
Some problems:
1) The truck came with one of those super crappy universal clamp-on turn signals (promptly thrown in the trash) and I think the PO did his own wiring so there are A LOT of spliced and unconnected wires.
2) The turn signal I picked up from the junkyard has wire colors that do not match the diagrams. I suppose the switch is from a different year but it fits in properly.
So what I really need is a fundamental understanding of how these things are supposed to operate with each other. Actually the absolute best thing would be an electrical schematic and something that correlates pin connections on the switch and other components to that schematic.
Anybody have anything that can help?
Honestly, the reason I am going through this exercise is because I believe that there is a much better way to make this system work than its original design so I would like to improve it. I think a simple microcontroller and relay can handle this task really easily.
Before I can improve it, however, I would like to have a solid understanding of how it originally worked.

I just rewired all of that... Some factory wiring was intact, but not all. There was NO stoplight switch, and the steering column was from a '70's model, so not all of the wiring matched up... BUT- I got it all figured out. This diargam-

helped a lot. it is for a 65, but much of it was the same. The only thing that I haven't figured out yet is the hazard flasher- Everything else is working fine.
I had to install a new stoplight switch, the master cylinder had been replaced, so the old pressure switch was gone. I put a new one on the pedal.
Don't you just LOVE it when you get to try to figure out a previous owners wiring?

Brake light switch
What kind of switch did you use for the brake?
I saw this one on ebay and thought it looked
okay. The pressure switches are cheap but I can
see why they are problematic

nonoodlez, I am a little puzzled about your post. You are going to need a new steering column with the power steering gear, wouldn't the new donor column come with turn signal? I matched up the wires using a 76 column in my 66.
I moved the brake lite switch from the donor and mounted it under the dash.

@andgott:
You know what, I have seen that picture before and dismissed it because I thought it just showed wire colors. Looking at it more closely now, I can see that it also shows the internal connections of most of the items themselves! That is exactly what I need. Thank you.
@Tobys351.9:
I am going to make use of the brake switch that I pulled from the 79. I just need to mount it. Speaking of which....
@jowilker:
That's exactly what I need to do for the brake switch. Did you just remove the rubber stopper and put the newer switch in its place?
Also, concerning the steering column, I just chopped and welded the original. I have a floor shifter so that was the most simple approach. Really, it took almost no time at all. Since I used the original, I was stuck with my original faulty turn signal.
