'sounds like you've done most everything else. Did you follow Tetraruby's advice? You could probaly put in a cat for less than a dealer scope job. Then again, when you add the $$ for another test...
I did Remove the EGR Restrictor Plate before the second test. My oil is not that old "2months" but I am going to change it as well. I noticed that my temp guage is fluctuating a bit so I think I am going to change my thermostat as well. The shop that did my muffler(hollowed out my precat) said they would do some free diagnosis but their shop doesn't have any scopes so I don't know if their diagonsis is going to be as thorough as Ford's.
I am sure I am going to really set the curve(the lower part) for retests at the facility I go to.
The other thing that P#sses me off is that the chick who does the simulated driving test at the inspection center does not know how to drive my truck. I have 4.10's and she seems to prefer the redline for a constant speed. I'm sorry Miss, but my truck will not do 40mph in second..please and thank-you. You got to wonder if it is the tester who is helping to skew my results...(The exhaust still smells a bit strong at the pipe in idle, however)
they run the test based on speed and not RPM? Never heard of that. Colorado (El Paso County) is an RPM based test. Basically idle (btw 800 and 1400, i think) and then a faster idle, say in the range of 2500 RPMs. Have to dig out my test results from the glove box to find out for sure.
Change your oil. Fresh oil will act like a sponge and help absorb some of the excess fuel. If you have a slightly rich running motor, you've got two months worth of accumulation. Retest it immediatley after changing the oil. Someone recommended to me, the last time I had mine tested, to add about half a gallon of ethanol to the tank. It supposed to help it run a little cleaner - I ran it when I had my truck tested and it passed after leaning the carb a tad. You can find denatured ethanol (ethyl alcohol) at a drug store - I'm sure Walmart has it. It's basically like rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol), but it's a slighltly different structure (for all intents and purposes). Add it to the tank and top it off with gas. Just don't let that mix sit to long - meaning, don't go store your truck for several months with the EtOH mix gas - it'll chew through some solvent resistant seals.
in the parts of texas here where the sn's have gotten their meathooks in, we gotta put it on a dyno (for cars that don't have a built-in interface to the inspection system computer) and run it with a load while they sniff the exhaust. it's enough of a pain that i'm considering moving way the hell out into the country.

We have a Gas company here called Mohawk that sells Ethanol gas. I think I will buy some premium Ethanol, change the oil, replace the thermostat and then cough up another 24 bones for the SmogNa*is... I will post my numbers for y'all again.
They put our vehicles on a dyno here and do a simulated road test with speeds raging from 15mph to 55mph.
Don't put too much of that ethanol gas in. It will burn a little hotter, potentially throwing your NOx numbers. Just put a little in, not the whole tank. Your numbers are close, you don't need much. Good Luck....what happened to pass or don't pay? Bummer you're forking out $$ each time for restests.
for those who were interested in the EGR carb spacer I am running, the part number is Edelbrock 8053. My local Checker Auto has it in stock (they are associated with parts america, advance auto). There is a spigot on it for an exhaust line, but I just have it capped off.
ReTest will be Wednesday....I did the Thermostat, Oil,Oil Filter(and tranny Fluid). The Temperature guage is still fluctuating a bit so maybe there is an issue with the sending unit.
I also have my rear tank filled with a "special brew" for the smog *****...hehehe.
I will post after I go through.
On another note...I went to another exhaust garage that a friend recommended. The manager took a look at my aftermarket cat, gave it a tap, and then told me to come into the shop. He went in the back and brought the cat that he normally installs on similar trucks. It was twice as long and half again as wide. I hoping to just get through to avoid having to spring more money. If I pass I have 2 years to sort out the cat issue before I am next due for a re-test.
