built 460/wide ratio C6 swap into 79 F100

I am here on and off, and here again. Quick recap for those who don't know my truck.

79 F100. Original NC truck. My father bought it in '98 to tow his burnout Volvo (truck matched, was old and was rust free).

Pic from '99 I think, after he changed wheels and added running boards. He paid $4K with a knocking 302 and slipping C4. Truck went through a nice stock 302 (no power), a 351W (I blew that up). Flash forward to 2002. No more Volvo, but the trailer was getting regular use towing other stuff around. I had a 460/c6 from a 78 Lincoln that I talked him into using.

Truck then had a mild 460/C6. Drove great and towed my Cougar around pretty easily. For reasons unrelated to this thread, my father sold the truck in 2003 so he could use a vehicle for work and get paid for it.

I saw the truck for sale in 2006 so I buy it back from the guy. Since that time I've done quite a few things.

Cleaned up the engine bay.

Redid the dash

3"/5" DJM drop. with 17" wheels and tires.

this is the *start* of the thread for my engine. Truck needs an engine bad. Burned oil at rate of 1 qt every 200 miles or so. Trans slipped around turns. I was going to spend the $ on a build, as I had a 60K mile stock 460/C6 from an 86E350 sitting, but then another drivetrain fell into my lap.

As of now..

Engine:
None right now!
Exhaust:
Hedman headers (1 3/4" primaries 3" collector)
3" headpipes
3" Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers
2.5" tailpipes (flowmaster U Fit Kit)
2.5" Dynomax Bullets, used as resonators

Drivetrain:
None right now!
Added OEM optional transmission cooler from an F250
9" upgraded with 31 spline axles
3.25:1 open diff

Suspension:
Larger Thunderbird disc calipers in front
Braided brake lines up front
F350 Power booster and master cylinder (increased stopping power)
Stock springs with 3/4 coil removed in front
DJM 3" Dream Beam front drop
DJM 4" rear drop (shackles and spring mounts)
DJM shocks
Addco 1" front sway bar
17x7" American Racing Ansen Sprint wheels
255 50 17 Falken STX01 tires

Exterior mods:
Clear corners, front and rear
73-75 grill shell swap (round headlights)
Sport style rear bumper
Hard bed cover
Trailer hitch!
FORD 3rd brake light cover for trailer hitch mount
H4 style headlights with 80/100 watt bulbs

Interior Mods:
White face gauges
Sunpro 3" tach
Added tilt wheel
Hurst Promatic 2 floor shifter
Custom Autosounds radio (fits OEM dash)
Python Alarm

Misc mods:
Dual Headlight relay upgrade
Actually put back the charcoal canister and made it work with the Edelbrock carb.
Added the following as well-
optional dual horn setup
optional under dash lights
optional glove box light
optional hood lock
optional overflow tank

Which brings me to today, finally started doing *something* to it. Chrome valve covers never last around here. Went through a new air cleaner lid and valve covers. I was too cheap to buy aluminum valve covers, but I came across these a few years ago. To keep them low maintenance I sprayed with with stainless steel paint, polished the ribs, and clear coated the whole thing.

Waiting for gaskets and other parts.. so I started cleaning up and painting items.

Saw that a reman P/S pump for the bracketry setup I'm using is a whopping $40.. so I got one, then sprayed it black.

And I won't have the weaker Ford pump anymore.

Good to see you back on here, glad to see you still have the truck. What are the specs on the new motor? I'm assuming the C6 has a E4OD planetary gearset for the wide ratio?

Still around. I parked the truck two years ago when the 460 AND the C6 both became tired.

Engine: C9VE block -- .040 over and internally balanced with football rods, forged pistons and Total Seal rings.
C9VE heads -- ported on the exhaust side to remove the thermactor bumps ARP studs.
Mild Crane cam, Comp Cams Magnum rockers, Performer intake, Holley 750 w/vacuum secondaries and ARP stainless bolt kit.
MSD 6 box on an OEM Duraspark dizzy. CVR mini starter.

Transmission: C6 with upgraded planetary gears from an E40D. TCI deep aluminum pan.

I can't take credit for the build, as it was in a car I bought, and ran excellent. I am simply regasketing, changing the timing chain, and installing.

Just some questions. What do the planetary gears from a E40D do? Is this a common practice on the C6. I'm rebuilding my C6 and I'm looking for ANY mods that can help it or make it slicker John

The E4OD planetary set will lower the ratio of 1st and 2nd gear. 3rd gear remains the same at 1:1. So, it is essentially a "wide ratio" gear set, which would allow you to run higher rearend gears and maintain the the same performance off the line. Do some google searching and you will find all of the specifics on the setup.

What Eric said. Basically my truck has 3.25:1 rear gears.. but first will 'act like' it had 3.59:1 gears, due to the higher than normal first gear due to the E4OD kit.

Sounds like a pretty fun combo. I know all about the tired 460/C6 combo. The drivetrain in the brown F350 is coming out next week. The 460 has had a rod knock for a few years now and 2nd gear is almost completely gone. I have to let off between shifts to keep it from overrevving between shifts. I found a used C6 that is (supposedly) built to "handle 1300hp". I don't believe that, but I'll only be putting about 400hp through it, so it should last for a while.

It sucks, when we built the engine (basically a regasket and change the top end) that was in it in 2002, it ran great. A little slow, but towed and was a great daily. father sent out the truck to have the carb tuned. He sold the truck, then I bought it from the owner in 2006...... THAT GUY made a mess. changed the carb, didn't change rods, disconnected the A/C.. Got the truck back and it drank/leaked oil around 1 qt ever 200 miles, and the trans slipped around corners.

Dug out the Edelbrock Performer intake that was on the truck originally. I'll be using it on this engine. Nice and torquey. Yes it's aluminum, and painted.

Also got a new 120gph fuel pump. This engine had an 80gph, but that pump is back in the gray Cougar. I had a stocky 40gph pump in the truck. This pump can be modded with a drill, a tap, and some AN fittings to increase the flow to 172gph. If I need it, I can do it.

Opened up the C6. Very clean.

Just adjusting the band and changing seals.

Engine is together, save oil pan.

Remind me to pull the hood next time.

Impressed that you got the motor out with the hood still on. Must have been a tight fit. I guess you weren't kidding about the truck sitting for the last few years. Looks like you're starting a moss garden on the side of the truck.

Clip off only IMO

Hood hell, whole front clip makes it barely a 2 man job. Never again with out the front clip off, 12 ish bolts + 4 for the hood and some elec connectors.

I have wrestled them things and killed my back for hours starting the trans bolts ect...now just set on the tire and enjoy a eng change.
