I have a 2001 ford ranger 2wd 5-speed truck. Its a plain jane white truck w/o ac and vinyl seats. It's my work vehicle and has 208,000 miles on it.
Something happened to my clutch today, actually i think it was the throw out bearing or slave cylinder. either way i have to remove the transmission. I haven't taken it apart yet, i just got it home. on to the question...
While looking up clutch kits on the auto parts site two different clutchs are listed.... 8 7/8" x 23 spline and 9 1/8" x 23 spline. Which one do I need? what do you guys need to know?
It has the 2.5 4 cylinder. I forgot that 2001 was the crossover year for the 2.3, could that be the difference in clutches i'm seeing?
use RockAuto Auto Parts to figure out what you need.
You need to replace the clutch disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing, pilot bearing, slave cylinder, and either have the fly wheel machined or replace it... Personally I would buy the parts from ford. This way you get another 208,000 instead of buying the cheap crap from napa, autozone, and all the other places that sell the cheap chinese made crap that may get you 50,000 to 100,000 only...
Thanks for the concern, i always buy my parts from rock auto when ever possible. Rock Auto also lists two different clutches for my vehicle. using years 2000 and 2002 is of no use either....same thing. I understand using ford parts for items such as spark plugs, wires, coils...ect. i do practice that. But for chassis parts such as clutches, bushings, oil some aftermarket vendors are better than OE.
back to the subject.
I have the transmission ready to come out, only one thing holding me back. the lines to the clutch slave needs to be removed. Theres a special tool for the job, one in the 9 1/8 kit and one in the 8 7/8 kit. Which kit?
