Just got a
1995 F250 4x4 5.8 (351W) E40d trans with 219000 mile
The exhaust manifol worked loose and warped. It has the Egr port hole on front and the Air Divertor port hole on the back, Cost is 91.00 new.
Can not find manifold anywhere with both of these emission ports, only a manifold with no ports or manifold with the front EGR port only (no rear).
Had to cut thr rear pipe anyway to get the manifold out as nut would not budge.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO.
Here in Louisiana smog inspection is not an issue yet.
Shold I plug the rear divertor tube and go with the manifold just with the EGR port or just rip out the whole emission system and go with a no pot manifold???
Need advise ASAP as wife is gettinng irritated I can't drive a truck I just bought.
Shorties is a generic term for short headers, like come stock on Fox-bodied Mustangs from the late '80's and early '90's. Lots of companies sell them (look on ebay) and they fit lots of cars very well with good power gains and none of the clearance problems that go with traditional long-tube headers. You can even find them that are 50 state legal but they may take a bit of work at a muffler shop. But it is a good alternative to just replacing your manifolds, especially if you can't find 'em.
Delete the whole smog system it won't have any effect on engine operation, it includes all the plumbing and valves on top of the motor which are connected to the air pump and exhaust system. The air pump can stay as an idler so you won't need a shorter belt, and the vacuum lines between the control solenoids near the coil and the diverter valves in the smog system have to be removed or capped, but these control solenoids need to stay electrically connected. The EGR is not part of this smog system and connot be removed without throwing codes and setting off the check engine light, so you may as well retain it.
I'm with Conanski concerning the EGR. It helps to reduce cylinder head temps, which can lead to detonation.
If you go with "Shorties" I would advise Ford Racing, Hooker, JBA, HedMan headers for your truck. Stay away from cheaper brands as the welds have been known to crack and also could leak around the mating surface of the head. If you plan a bit, you could find a set on Ebay as another member mentioned for cheap. Also, a knowledgable muffler shop that does more than just standard new exhuast and gets the common folk out the door is a plus. Tell them what you need. If you get, "I haven't done that before.." look or attitude I would visit another one.
