I was pulling my boat down the road and the truck lost power and started blowing black smoke. It runs and idles but giving it any fuel makes smoke and minimal power. I don't hear the turbo spooling so I think that might be part of it. Checked what I could see and the turbo connections seem fine...and the CAC boots were replaced within the last 6 months.
Code scan it. Check the MAP sensor hose and it's intake nipple and the EBP sensor tube for clogging. Check the VGT sensor connection. Pull and clean the EGR valve as it's possibly stuck open. Possibly lost a flex joint at the y-pipe and might have a leak there. Black smoke and loss of power indicates loss of boost. Do you have a boost gauge?
I am at home now. I didn't have the time, tools or resources to fuss with it myself. If it had happened in my driveway and not while I was on the road towing my boat I would have dug into it...
Just trying to get a feel for what could be the problem.
Now I got to run back to get the boat on the side of the highway. Wish the IDI I bought yesterday wasn't leaking from an injector...
Update: Pickup was towed to the shop. The mechanic cleaned the EGR and it runs like a top. That part makes me feel stupid that I didn't clean it or look at it sooner. BUT while the mechanic ran the rig he told me that the ECT and EOT were 25 degrees apart. Unfortunately, I knew what that meant.
I told them to go ahead and replace the oil cooler and EGR cooler. Does this sound like reasonable solution? If I go with stock replacement parts am I good or should I insist on BPD parts? They quoted me at $2000 for all the parts and labor including the EGR cleaning.
The stock egr cooler on your 03 should still be fine,as long as its the round one.it'll save you money if it is,from what I hear they rarely fail.find out before they tear into it.as far as 2000 for everything, sounds good to me.but you'll save probably 300 if you've got the round egr cooler.
I fully agree (the parts are on order). If the overwhelming consensus was to leave it alone I would have...but thats not the case. So I won't halt the repair progress.
