If i switch from a 302 to a 351 in an 89 bronco, do I need the wiring harness? I found an 89 351 bronco in a wrecking yard, can I just use the computer and my wiring? What else do i need to know?
I also found a 95 351w with 40K and no computer for $1100 is this good? I would probably end up with troubles putting this one in?
That is a very good deal for a 95 with only 40k. You CAN use the same wiring harness and even the same computer if you like. However, performance will be a little better with the 351 computer from what I hear. You should have very little compatibility issues also.
I recently swapped out a 302 for a 351W stroker in a 93 F-150 with an AOD. The 95 351W engine you described is a good deal-plus this year 351W has the factory roller cam. The Y-pipe (exhaust) will need to be replaced since the 351W is slightly higher and wider than the 302. Also, try to get the AC/PS and Air Pump/Alternator brackets that go with the 351W - I know the AC/PS bracket is different between the 302 and 351W. As Gamehunter said, the wiring harnesses and computers should work OK.
BUT - The most important thing for your swap is to use the correct flexplate between the engine and transmission. DO NOT use the flexplate that comes with the 351W-it will most likely be for a C6/E4OD transmission and this will not mate properly with the AOD. You need Ford P/N EOAZ-6375-A. Go to this web site - http://www.bulkpart.com/FLYford.html. They have this flexplate for about $23 or you can buy it from your local Ford dealer for about $95.
Don't waste time trying to find this flexplate in a wrecking yard - Ford only put the AOD behind the 351W from the factory for a very short time in the early 80's. I would be sure and change the transmission fluid and filter in your AOD and be aware that the added torque of the 351W will probably shorten its life.
I know this has nothing to do with the original question, but was just wondering if the AOD trans will fit in my 1980 Bronco. I currently have a 351M, Motorcraft 2150 2 BRL, C6 transmission and a NP208 transfer? How much modifacation will i have to do to crossmembers and drivetrain? I would really like to switch the Mod motor to a Windser, but i think that might be more work that can afford at this point.
