I have a 96, but my boss is having issues with his 94 idi, so I thought I'd come to y'alls neck of the woods for help. It starts fine and runs fine under power, but when you take your foot off the accelerator, it stalls out. Fuel delivery issue? Thanks for any input
Sounds like it, maybe the fuel filter. Is it turbo or no? What kind of drivetrain....trans, 4x4, etc. Few more specs. Also under load what does the exhaust look like? How old are injectors and injection pump? how old is the air filter?
The motor has about 75k on it, so injectors and pump have the same mileage. It's a 4x4 auto and it has a turbo. No black smoke under power. He will b doing fuel and air filter tonight, so we shall see if that takes care of it. Thanks
It sounds like something I ran into with my old Blazer (same DB2 injection pump, just rotates in the opposite direction) - the fuel filter does not really stop 100% of everything floating inside the fuel, eventually nasty stuff will build up inside the injection pump and cause a valve or something to stick instead of moving smooth. The solution is to soak-clean the inside of the injection pump - warm the engine up good first, then take the fuel filter off and dump what's in it, then fill the filter with some diesel-cleaning chemical such as Diesel Kleen and put it back on the engine, start the truck, let it run for like half a minute, then shut it off and let it sit for a few hours, or preferably, overnight. While it sits the cleaner chemical will eat away at the nasty gummy stuff, and when you start the truck next time all the junk will hopefully be dissolved and the valves and such inside the pump will be working nice and smooth again. It is not a problem associated with mileage on the engine per se, but more of a poor fuel quality issue.
Hmmmm...interesting...mine does pretty much the same thing. Starts fine, idles fine, drives fine, tiny bit of smoke under load, but when I push in the clutch i have to give it a wee bit of throttle or it sometimes stalls. Fuel filter has about 5k km on it. I use howes conditioner in her. Air filter? I've had the truck for 10k km and haven't changed it, have no idea how old the IP and injectors are, truck has 205k km. would rather not have to go to the expense of a new IP and injectors
What is the air filter change interval?
I thought it might be my exhaust, the tip of the tailpipe had this odd series of perforated baffles that I basically drilled out most of them but couldn't reach the last one.
Wildmand, while I do not claim to be an expert in vehicle mechanics and the workings of a diesel engine, I do believe that a plugged air filer would manifest itself when you try to go fast in engine speed (read gas pedal on the floor), as that is when (at least my) logic suggests the engine will need most air. For the same reason I do not think it is your exhaust either - put your hand in front of the air intake and then the exhaust pipe, have someone revv the engine up for you, you will notice the difference right away. But say, when you do not release the gas pedal all of sudden, but instead gradually and gently let off it, does your truck still try to stall?
For the record I also used Howes in my Blazer, and the pump still managed to get gummy - however, for all I know it could have been the previous owners feeding the poor thing some questionable home-made fuel.
Fill the fuel filter with diesel kleen before installing. Fire it up and let idle for 30 seconds, then shut it off. LEt it sit for a couple hours or overnight and then fire it up and get on it! Drive it hard to clear it all out. Also post back if the fuel has an off color or smells bad. If the filter is clogged up or gross looking it may be another issue, algae. Just start with the air and fuel and see. Might be a cheap fix. lol.
As far as we can tell, nothing is leaking. However, a new fuel filter will be in tonight, napa was out of air filters and we shall see if that does the trick. Thanks for all the input guys
mine was doing this.when i replaced the injectors it cured it.
i thought i had it starting pretty good.i was wrong! starts inside 1 sec all the time now, even when cold.can't tell the diff between a cold start and a warm start anymore.

What are you guys paying for IDI injectors? I know the price for the DI's and they are scary

i got mine from the U-haul inventory clear out.
sold as remans, though they looked brand new.
didn't much matter to me as i only payed like $8 and change per injector lol (Delphi BB codes).
though even brand new, they are pennies on the dollar compared to the psd.cus these are not for direct injection of course.
these are very low pop pressure injectors.like 1,800 roughly.
the direct injectors for your PSD don't pop open until like 20,000-30,000 psi haha.so we are fortunate in the way that our old school diesel parts are inexpensive to build.

Well the new fuel filter didn't do the trick. We are trying to locate an air filter and some diesel kleen to see if that works. If not I guess it's back to the drawing board. Can you do a buzz test on these idi injectors and if so, how?
