It's obvious that the consensus is there are no gains from putting an aftermarket air intake on, just the sucking noise. This is what I'm after, I've always like that sound. Two questions. The first is, how much of a sound difference is there with an aftermarket intake? The second is, has anyone experienced any actual losses from using one. I found a good deal on one that was bought but never installed so just curious.
I've read(I think somewhere in this 6.2 forum) that these trucks have a very loud intake sound with a CAI. I like that sound myself, just not enough to justify the cost. Not to mention with my occasional creek crossing, I like the added protection of the factory set up. Not that I ever get into anything more than 12"-18" deep, but I've found holes I wasn't expecting before. That's why my rockers bent.
My last foxbody mustang had one of those fender mounted CAI. I couldn't drive it if rain was in the forecast. Every time it rained heavy, the thing would buck and stall and throw a cloud of steam out the exhaust. It was a loaded gun in the dry, so maybe that was a good thing.
I'm using the app and can't link threads, but entering "6.2 CAI" in the search yield many threads. A quick read showed multiple members saying it's extremely loud, especially when towing. To the point it's unbearable.
Hmm... I can't make up my mind. I can get the K&N I found for 80 bucks so it's pretty tempting just to pick it up and give it a try. I bet it would be obnoxiously loud with my muffler delete though.
Took mine loose. Went for a short test drive. Definitely a noticeable little growl. The roads are wet and my little backroad is very slick. Ever time I tried to hammer it hard the rear tire broke loose. I'll try it out in the morning. Your right, this is a 5 minute or less mod. And can go back just as quick.
Just got done "testing" the new mod. I do think it made a difference. Doesn't have the sucking sound of an intake but definately added some exhaust sound. I'll have to try it over the next couple days and see what I think.
There is a noticeable difference at low rpms. Someone with stock exhaust may notice it more. It's definitely not anything unbearably loud by any means. With the radio on, you would never know, and I don't turn the radio up loud. With the windows down, it's much more noticeable.
