I'm sitting here with a truck trader in front of me marveling at how cheap these 99's are. Especially the supercabs not so much the crew cabs. I think I'm gonna buy one but I'm wondering if there are any notorious problems with the 99 model year. I know it was the first year of the new body style and all.
Any suggestions. I'm looking at a 99 f-250 v-8 5 spd 4x4 for 12,000.
'99's were known to have a piston slap issue. You should be able to hear it when starting a cold engine.
Also, if you buy a V10, (I would buy a V10 over the V8 anyway) they had less H.P.in '99 than in 2000 due to the way the heads were configured.
Other issues were minor (squeeky springs, etc.) I can't remember anything else
Somebody else will chime in.
Piston slap in the 5.4? God you'd think they would have gotten the 351 figured out by now. It's been around forever.
No I'm not really looking for a v-10. They seem to hold their resale value too much. You can't find any cheap ones. If I spend that much $$ I'd get a Powerstroke.
I was wondering if anyone knows how much it would cost to put the '02 style headlights and marker lights in the front. Has anyone bought a set from Ford or found a set in a junkyard and know how much$$
The 351w is a 5.8L V8 that Ford has since discontinued and replaced with the new completely unrelated 5.4L 330ci V8.
They did have piston slap issues with the 5.4 in '99, but I think for the most part they were taken care of.
My brother has a '99 F250 SD with the 5.4 and it purrs like a kitten at 110,000 miles.
The headlight swap to the '02 style is an easy install, check the SD FAQ thread for details, as for a price, I'm not sure.
I bought my 99 SD SC 4x4 new. I do have the power stroke though so I can't comment on the 5.4 It now has 96000 on her. The only major problem that I have had is a new torque convertor at approx. 65000 miles. I have been very happy with this truck. My recomendation for a 99 year model
I don't think too much of ford's automatic's anyway. I had a 96 f-350 psd and it ate the trannie at about 80,000. I had just sold it so I don't know the particulars about what exactly was wrong with it but I think I'll try to find a 5 or 6 speed depending on what I get. The 99 I was looking at is sold
Well I found the one for me. I just got a 99 cc Long Bed XLT 4x4 psd 6 spd! I'm totally jazzed about the truck! It's only got 66,000 on it and it's already leveled and has 35's on it.
$22,000
That's a crazy good deal for around here. Everything else I've looked at was like 30k or had 140k miles or so.
The only problem with it is that the guy says he's had to replace the drive by wire sensor on the gas pedal. He said it started acting up a while ago again and he thinks it's the same thing. I know it's easy to replace but does anyone know what it costs? I think you have to get it from FoMoCo because my local parts store doesn't have it.
Is there anything else that would make my PSD return to idle for a few seconds when you're still pressing on the accelerator? It hasn't done it to me but he said that is what it did. He said he pulled over and screwed with it for a sec and it started working again
